Joffrey Ballet Promotes Adam Blyde to Associate Artistic Director
Ashley Wheater MBE names Blyde, who joined the Chicago company as rehearsal director, to the newly created post.
Ashley Wheater MBE, The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director has announced the promotion of Adam Blyde, Rehearsal Director for The Joffrey Ballet, to Associate Artistic Director, a new title and position within The Joffrey Ballet. Blyde is the first Associate Artistic Director since Wheater's appointment as Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet in 2007.
“Adam is an artist and leader of exceptional integrity, musicality, and kindness. Over the past decade, he has become indispensable to the Joffrey — a respected teacher, coach, and répétiteur whose impact resonates across the organization,” says The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater MBE. “Adam understands this art form on the deepest level: the discipline it demands, the trust it requires, and the responsibility of guiding artists toward their fullest potential. He has the full confidence of our Company, musicians, and creative partners through his consistent leadership, knowledge of the repertory, and measure of artistic excellence he brings to every room. Quite simply, Adam is as good as it gets. I cannot think of a more trusted or capable leader for this role.”
Since joining The Joffrey Ballet as Rehearsal Director in 2016, Blyde has played a central role in shaping many of the Company's most ambitious productions and world premieres. Blyde was involved in the creative process for Yuri Possokhov's Anna Karenina and later traveled to help stage the ballet with The Australian Ballet. He also played a significant role in the development and staging of Cathy Marston's Atonement, including supporting the production during its run with Ballett Zürich. Most recently, Blyde was closely involved in the creation and rehearsal process for Yuri Possokhov's Eugene Onegin during the ballet's world premiere with San Francisco Ballet, ahead of its Chicago premiere with the Joffrey on June 4-14, 2026, at the Lyric Opera House. Across productions, he has become a trusted artistic leader for choreographers, artists, and creative teams alike.
“My commitment to the Company and its future runs deep, and it is an honor to step into this role. The Joffrey holds itself to an extraordinary standard, and I have always believed that standard begins in the studio — through a culture of discipline, trust, and curiosity,” says Associate Artistic Director Adam Blyde. “What makes the Joffrey so distinctive is the depth of its artistic ambition and willingness to evolve. To help guide that work alongside artists and colleagues of this caliber is a privilege.”
In his expanded role, Blyde will serve as a senior artistic leader and key partner to The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director in advancing The Joffrey Ballet's creative vision across the Company, the Grainger Academy of The Joffrey Ballet, and Community Engagement programming. He will help guide artistic planning and oversee rehearsal and casting operations, while continuing to lead rehearsals and coach artists in the studio.
Blyde will also help shape season planning and long-term artistic strategy, and work closely with visiting choreographers, creative teams, and artistic staff to ensure the highest standards of performance and continuity across the repertory, and throughout the creation of new work. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, Blyde will contribute to institutional planning and cross-departmental collaboration while also serving as a prominent ambassador for the Joffrey in performances, donor events, and community engagements.
