Introducing Feel the Floor by Maureen Footer

When author Maureen Footer first encountered the name Buddy Bradley, she was unfamiliar with who he was and how he influenced the dance field. The following six years, Footer dedicated her life to restoring his legacy, providing insight into his family history, journey to New York, and his groundbreaking career as a jazz choreographer. This month, she celebrates the official publishing of Feel the Floor: Restoring the Life and Legacy of Jazz Choreographer Buddy Bradley.

Introducing Feel the Floor by Maureen Footer ImageBradley, who taught legendary performers such as Eleanor Powell and Adele Astaire, also influenced many foundational figures in the industry. "He was revolutionizing theatrical dance," says Footer. "He was the trailblazer for bringing jazz to major choreographers such as Frederick Ashton and George Balanchine, so we see the results of his work, but we didn’t know who he was."

While his influence continues to shape the dance industry today, Bradley’s name and contributions have largely faded from public recognition. Through Feel the Floor, Footer not only restores Bradley's name to public conciousness; she brings his livelihood and artistry to life.
