In a new interview in today's New York Times, INTO THE WOODS star Emily Blunt talks about THE FIRST TIME she met legendary composer Stephen Sondheim and reveals that she had never even seen the classic fairytale-themed musical on stage before.

"I remember him coming in," says the actress. "I was doing "Moments in the Woods," that big number after I had the fling with THE PRINCE [Cinderella's Prince], and he felt that I was trying to make it sound too pretty. He said, "She's on a mission, she needs to figure out what she's going to do, you gotta keep it moving." I was trying to make it sound nice for him."

Blunt went on to share that she had not only never seen a production of INTO THE WOODS before, but had actually never even heard of the show. "I'd never heard of it, which I'm so embarrassed to say. It's not so well known in England. Everybody does it in their HIGH SCHOOL and college here."

She continued, "Sadly, they usually only do the first act, which is kind of annoying because it's the happily ever after and everyone gets their wish. That's a shame because I think we are in a society where we're sort of coddling our kids, and I think kids like to be challenged. No one's more perceptive than a child. You have 11-year-olds looking at the most atrocious stuff online in their bedrooms. I've had a few of my friends saying, "Is it O.K. for kids?" And I always say, "Yes, it is, actually."

INTO THE WOODS, hitting theaters on December 25th, is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests.

This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy) - all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them. Rob Marshall, the talented filmmaker behind the Academy Award-winning musical "Chicago" and Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: OnStranger Tides," helms the film, which is based on the Tony-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the music and lyrics.
