EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Q&A- Thunderbards

Tell us a bit about 4ND.

4nd is our fourth show at the Fringe and, having taken a break from the action last year, feels like a bit of a coming-of-age show as an act. We're a little older now, a little wiser and that struggle with growing up and maturing is there in the material. We do address the idea of worrying about failure in life and love, but ultimately though, it's a joke-packed show full of lots of silly sketches.

What was the inspiration for the show?

We set out to create a sort of montage show; an hour of unconnected jokes and sketches that barrelled along as fast as possible, giving the audience as much of the funniest material we had as quickly as possible. As we wrote the show though, we did notice certain themes emerging and they have fed into how we have constructed the show. It now feels like a really fast-paced, joke-heavy sketch punctuated with some tongue-in-cheek reflections on how we perceive our own lives.

What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?

We know that our previous shows have packed in a lot of jokes in the hour, and this time is no different. We both like watching sketch shows that use clever narrative devices but only if they don't do so at the expense of having really funny material. Our show offers people a seriously high frequency of jokes and laughs, and even a little moment of reflection about life on top of that.

Who would you recommend comes to see you?

There's a good spread of material in this year's show for different people. There's everything from more old-fashioned wordplay to physical comedy and surreal stuff too. Plus, this year we've embraced technology a little more. You'd have to come and see the show to know what that means. Basically it's for anyone from teenagers and upwards who enjoys silly yet clever comedy.

Are there any other shows you're hoping to catch at the festival?

Looking forward to Joseph Morpurgo's new hour, as well as stand up from Pierre Novelli and sketch from Geins Family Giftshop. There's a really fun, not-too-serious poetry night called 'Rhymes With Orange' on too which is very enjoyable.
