EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Q&A- The Conscious Uncoupling Image

Tell us a bit about The Conscious Uncoupling.

It's a nonlinear narrative comedy / storytelling show cutting between a series of breakup emails, a romantic story about the beginnings of the relationship and the visits of three ghosts of our romantic past, present and future. The show was written last year and programmed by London's Southbank Centre for Festival Of Love.

Why bring it to Edinburgh?

2016 was the first year in many that I missed Edinburgh. I was offered a place on a writers' retreat in Los Angeles to begin writing my book (out this Summer) and I decided to go and do that instead. But I love the show and so many people have said it's my strongest yet. So it seemed like it should come to Edinburgh. It's been quite handy to have the show written and ready prior to making venue applications.

What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?

People have commented on the warmth, honesty and universality of the show. Although it's a story about a relationship between two women, one straight man said to me afterwards, 'all hearts break the same.' And that's very true. I think the show takes us on that rollercoaster of emotions from lows to highs we might experience in the aftermath of a separation.

What are the benefits of performing at the Free Festival?

I like the ethos of the Free Festival and the accessibility to performers and audiences alike. I did years of runs at paid venues including Underbelly and Assembly. But the costs of doing Edinburgh were escalating year on year. Free Festival is just a more sensible model.

Who would you recommend comes to see you?

Anyone who has ever experienced a heartbreak - either those who have had a bit of time and space and are now ready to laugh at the tragedy or those who still feel sad and want to know they're not alone. I've had people crying and laughing in my audiences.

Timings and ticket information for The Conscious Uncoupling are available on the edfringe website.
