About the show:

This piece asks questions of belief and seeks answers within personal encounters. A convent with six nuns in Switzerland is part of their expedition that explores belief. How questionless is belief in reality and to what extent does a life in the convent represent the anti-model for urbanites who think of themselves as modern? After a period of research in the convent of St Josef, performers Julia Bihl and Johannes Dullin meet on stage and confront their experiences with their own different beliefs, while the nuns speak for themselves on the video screen.

Why bring it to Edinburgh?

We'd like to perform Like a Prayer in Edinburgh because we haven't been in the UK yet and we want to reach a wider audience. We are also very interested in experiencing the atmosphere at the Fringe Festival and hope we'll make a lot of new contacts and friends there.

What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?

I've never been to the Fringe before, but from what I know there isn't much research-based documentary theatre at the Fringe. The show also incorporates live recordings and is spoken in German with English subtitles on a screen. The process to create this performance has been fairly long, with a journey of the whole production team to a monastery in Central Switzerland to speak to the nuns there. It is very thoughtful, personal and profound, if you're willing to follow.

Who would you recommend comes to see you?

Everyone who ever asked themselves: Who am I? Where am I coming from and where am I going to, is there a God or isn't there anything? Is there anything like a truth about life? We hope to appeal to anyone, but especially those with spiritual and/or religious interests and backgrounds.

Are there any other shows you're hoping to catch at the festival?

There is the huge Edinburgh Festival Fringe Program lying on my desk right now - after I've studied it, I'll tell you!

Timings and ticket information for Like A Prayer are available on the edfringe website.
