EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Q&A- Ian Smith
Tell us a bit about Snowflake.
It's a show about uniqueness and a holiday to Tromso (Norway). It's me talking and shouting for an hour, trying to mash them together to form a cohesive show. There's also a joke aubergines and a bit about me standing in shit.
Do you really wear two pairs of socks at all times or is that just something you put in your press release to see if anyone notices?
I really do. People seem to think it's mad. Maybe it is. The amount of washing and admin involved in wearing two pairs of socks at all times is an absolute nightmare. On a very warm day - I'll just wear a single ankle sock. In Tromso, at one point I was wearing three socks!
What sets Snowflake apart from other shows at the Fringe?
It's the only show that will involve Tromso, a philosophical look at uniqueness, me shouting "They've got parsnips in!", a short language course AND a bit about buying too many flapjacks. Or at least, I hope it is. As I'm typing this it may also involve a story about trolls, a film audio description I've done and a video of my nearly killing a man in a sledding accident.
Who would you recommend comes to see you?
People. 70 of them a day, ideally.
What's next for you after Edinburgh?
I've written a radio sitcom and a web series - I'd love to do more of them, so I imagine I'll be pitching them around. I filmed a role in a feature film called Songbird - I have no idea when that will be coming out, but definitely after Edinburgh. Hopefully I'll do some dates of the show in London too and I'll start writing ideas for next Fringe!
