EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Q&A- Eve
Tell us a little bit about Eve.
Eve is the story of a child brought up as a boy in the fifties who knows, somehow this is wrong. As it happens, that child is me....
Why is it so important to tell this story?
Because everyones story matters... For most of my life I was silenced by prejudice and prevented from free expression of who I was. This still happens to far too many of us in far too many places in the world. Telling our stories resists prejudice and shame. And helps make life better for everyone.
What's next for your show after the Fringe?
It goes to the Glasgow Citizens Theatre in the week of 11-16th September. And after that, who knows....
Who would you recommend comes to see the play?
Everyone. This is also a play about someone coming to terms with their past, and we all have to do that. This is also a play about someone trying to see past the lies they were told as a child and reach a full understanding and acceptance of who they truly are. And we all have to do that too...
Tell us a little about the background of the creative team.
I'm a playwright, poet, translator and performer who's also a father and grandmother.
I've written over 80 plays, which have been performed all over the world. The last play I wrote and performed on the Fringe, "The Gospel According to Jesus Queen of Heaven" is still touring Brazil (in Portuguese), has just been translated into Spanish, and is about to tour Uruguay and Argentina. My first hit at the Fringe, "Losing Venice" was at the Traverse in 1985 and it's great to be back there as a writer and performer. My co-writer, Chris Goode, is one of the best writers, theatre makes and performers in the UK. And he's also written some beautiful music for the show. My director, Susan Worsfold, is one of the best voice coaches in Scotland. We've worked together for about 8 years and it's such a joy to be continuing our artistic partnership. She's also designed the show in a stunningly beautiful way.
Kai Fischer (lighting), Matt Padden (sound design), Seth Hardwick (video design) and Aileen Sherry (costume) are just the best in the business.
