EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Q&A- Dr Carnesky's Incredible Bleeding Women Image

Tell us a bit about Dr Carnesky's Incredible Bleeding Women.

It's an untamed radical romp through the hidden magical power of menstruation looking at anthropology, mythology, magic, horror films, activism and true lived experiences from a group of truly diverse spectacular cabaret performers.

How has the show gone down with audiences so far?

It has had a very full on effect with people crying, laughing and even fainting.... but most exciting is the activist movement called the Menstronauts that has popped up as a result of it.

What inspired you to create the show?

I started by doing a PHD about reinventing rituals of menstruation and decided to make the research into a living breathing fun and serious spectacular show celebrating all things menstrual and revealing some real moving stories that came out as a result of the collaborative way of making the show.

What sets Dr Carnesky apart from other theatre shows at the Fringe?

Well you could say it's a real magic show in that we created it using some very real menstrual magik.... its both a popular fun spectacle but also a heartfelt moving show that connects to women and men about the very important cycles our bodies go through. Its also a call to arms for us to stand up together to work politically and communally to speak up against ignorance and misogyny on issues around women' s bodies and women's rights.

Are there any other performances you are hoping to catch in Edinburgh?

Wild Bore with UrsulA Martinez, Zoe Coombs Marr and Adrienne Truscott at the Traverse.

Who would you recommend your show to?

All women, people who identify now or in the past or in the future as women, men who love women, men who are confused by women's bodies. Feminists, menstruators, activists, dreamers, revolutionaries, witches, horror movie fans, surrealists, psychedelic artists, magic fans, therapists, lunatics.

Timings and ticket information for Dr Carnesky's Incredible Bleeding Women are available on the edfringe website.
