EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Q&A- Cow Image

Tell us a bit about Cow.

COW is a rural tragicomedy with songs. It's written and performed by actor and singer Jessica Barker-Wren and directed by Lucy Wray.

COW's themes include loss, climate change, UK farming and our relationship to the EU. It is also a deeply personal reflection on growing up and dealing with the death of a parent.

Bethan comes back to the family farm to find the community and support structures she took for granted are being steadily dismantled. Bethan faces that particular stage in adulthood when you lose your parents, and you REALLY have to grow up. Set firmly in the Devonshire countryside, and wrapped in velour, COW takes an irreverent look at some serious topics.

Why bring it to Edinburgh?

We're bringing the cow to market! We want to tour the show and Edinburgh is the perfect place to share new work, get it in front of a wide audience and programmers. We've developed COW in Devon with some great artist support from The Bike Shed Theatre and Theatre Royal Plymouth. Edinburgh is now our pathway to far flung theatres in Fyfe, village halls in Abergavenny and crypts in Cornwall.

What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?

Probably the life size cow on wheels.

Who would you recommend comes to see your show?

Anyone who:

is on Cowgate around midday (we're on at 12.10pm)

wants to catch a tasty 60min show before lunch

likes rural tragicomedy

likes songs

likes cows

has parents/has lost parents

Are there any other performances you're hoping to catch at the festival?

So much! New work from Gecko, Paper Cinema, Jamie Wood, Shôn Dale-Jones...Worklight's FIX at the Pleasance... We've seen developments of Richard Carpenter is Close to You which we LOVE, and managed to catch the new Ontroerend Goed show £¥€$ while we've been rehearsing at Theatre Royal Plymouth - we'll definitely see both those again up in Edinburgh.

Timings and ticket information for Cow are available on the edfringe website.
