EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Q&A- Caleidocello Image

Tell us a bit about Caleidocello.

It's a colorful musical journey through different styles and genres. A kaleidoscope of sounds, maybe. My initial idea was that I had the impression that the cello as an instrument has more possibilities than one can normally experience in the classical music concert setting. So I made this program, filled with all kinds of pieces that demand new playing techniques, another kind of flexibility to be able to channel a more free and archaic energy. Also to reach younger people again, who feel deterred by the austerity of the concert halls.

The audience will be taken through different kinds of moods, musical characters, with music from the classical world, the world of Jazz, Bluegrass, and generally Cross Over. It should be refreshing and entertaining but also with poetic depth.

Why bring it to Edinburgh?

I think it's the perfect place to present this program. A lot of young and open people around, from what I have heard, and generally an atmosphere of creative freedom and freedom of expression. Defying the norm is very important for everything creative, I think, and a Festival that supports that in such a way seems like the perfect opportunity to connect to kindred spirits!

What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?

Definitely the selection of music, and the mix between „classic" virtuosity and archaic energy. The way a classical instrument like the cello is played here is certainly not so common I think.

Who would you recommend comes to see you?

Anyone who likes and loves music, really all sorts of music. Also children have been happy listening to it! If you would like to be refreshed and inspired, please come!

Are there any other shows you're hoping to catch at the festival?

I would like to watch some of the shows at the Jazz Bar and of course the concerts of my fellow cellists. I am curious about Dance Shows too, because I am hoping to be able to find partners for cooperations in the future.

Timings and ticket information for Caleidocello can be found on the edfringe website.
