EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Q&A- Boris & Sergey's One Man Extravaganza
Tell us a bit about your show
Boris & Sergey's One Man Extravaganza is a comedy-fuelled adult puppetry show that every now and then slaps the audience with moments of bittersweet sadness.
We meet Boris & Sergey at the height of their careers in the golden age of Hollywood. Sergey wants this fame to himself and debuts his solo show, a pretentious self-indulgent showcase that makes Kanye West look like a vulnerable, self-conscious saint. It takes Sergey into a dark place, the shadow of Boris!
There is also a quiz called 'what's in the box', just come and see it for that.
Why bring it to Edinburgh?
Boris & Sergey have been Fringe regulars since 2010, we are lucky enough to have a great following in Edinburgh and the die-hard fans love it. Each year we have more followers...like a cult...Actually, it is a cult.
It is such a great platform to showcase exciting new work and we feel we have found a gap in the market in the form of Boris & Sergey. They are the classic clown duo that people enjoy to hate, pity and love.
What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?
I still haven't seen another show like it. It is chaotic with moments of beauty, all linked together by two loud, outspoken puppets. Through all of this we never lose sight of the puppetry. These bunraku puppets are made of leather and have three people on each, giving their movements real depth and clarity even during the action-packed fight sequences. Boris & Sergey are the punks of puppetry.
Who would you recommend comes to see your show?
People who think puppetry is just for kids or have never seen a puppetry show: give us an hour of your time and I guarantee it will change your mind. Also, puppetry aside, it's for anyone who loves to laugh and then shed a tear moments afterwards. The two characters have a very real relationship that speaks to all of us; the squabbling, laughter and frustration come in equal measures. The puppets have just starred in the new Plan B music video so if you have ever listened to music....come see it.
Are there any other performances you're hoping to catch at the festival?
Every year I mark out about 50 shows I want to see and then get to the end of the month and realise I have seen two of them! So yes, lots, but I'm not going to make any promises.
