The inaugural performance by Deviant Septet--a new collective of the country's foremost contemporary music players modeled after Igor Stravinsky's favored instrumentation of violin, bass, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, and percussion--will present an eclectic evening centered around the virtuosic piece that inspired their ensemble, Stravinsky's l'Histoire du Soldat (A Soldier's Tale), on May 26th at New York City's Greenwich Music House.

The evening will feature a fully-staged version of l'Histoire du Soldat under the stage direction of Rafael Gallegos, featuring Septet members Brad and Doug Balliett performing the parts of the Narrator and Devil (usually reserved for non-playing actors), Sean Carvajal as the Soldier and Dulce Jimenez as the Princess.

The night will also include world premieres of works commissioned by the Septet, Dutch composer Ruben Naeff's For the Deviants and Alarm Will Sound cellist/composer Stefan Freund's The Devil Dances with Tom Sawyer--a mash-up of Rush's "Tom Sawyer" and two movements from l'Histoire. An arrangement from Septet co-founder Mike Gurfield of Frank Zappa's own homage to Stravinsky's Tale, "Titties n' Beer", will also be performed.
