Award winning singer-songwriter Cheeyang Ng will make his composer debut at Joe's Pub on September 24 (Monday) 9:30pm, opening Musical Theatre Factory's (MTF) fifth season with new Producing Artistic Director, Mei Ann Teo, at the helm.
The evening will feature an all-Asian cast, band and creative team, showcasing Asians and Asian-Americans of a diverse heritage, including Japanese-American, Filipino-American, Vietnamese-American, Indian-American, Korean-American, Chinese-American, and performers of mixed race backgrounds.
Cheeyang will be leading the cast, presenting all original material that he composed, including songs from EASTBOUND (2018 New York Theatre Barn's IMPACT Award, 2016 National Alliance for Musical Theatre's Writers Grant and Musical Theatre Factory's 2017-2018 Residencies), written with Khiyon Hursey, and ONLY US (2018 Drama League's First Stage Residency) written with Eric Sorrels. He will also share stand-alone songs and songs from his new project, THE GOLDEN THRESHOLD, co-written with Eric Sorrels, set in 1930s India during the Salt March, exploring whether an individual can change the world even if they aren't remembered by history.
Born and raised in Singapore, Cheeyang has toured with all-star a cappella group, Vocalosity, and has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and all around the world.
The concert is directed by Nina Zoie Lam (co-founder of the National Asian Artists Project) and music directed by Justin Ramos. Performers include Hana Bookman, Ben Choi-Harris (Nat'l Tour: A Christmas Story), Catherine Gloria, Cassandra Hlong, Daniel Le, Toren Nakamura, David Park (Off B'way: Red Roses Green Gold), Shea Renne (B'way: Allegiance), Kuhoo Verma (Film: The Big Sick) and Xiaoqing Zhang. The band will feature Joan Chew (Lez Zeppelin) on bass, Hiroyuki Matsuura (Shakespeare in the Park: Twelfth Night) on drums and Violet Wang on cello.
Audiences can use code "MTFMAKER" for $5 off. Tickets are available on Joe's Pub here.
