Carolina Fonseca in GLIMPSE: THE ART OF DYING Set for Theaterlab This Week

Theaterlab (Orietta Crispino, Artistic Director) welcomes back Portuguese dancer/choreographer Carolina Fonseca to its Midtown home (357 West 36th Street, 3rd Floor) this week, April 22 through 24, 2015. GLIMPSE: THE ART OF DYING marks the third collaboration between Fonseca and Theaterlab, which presented her two meditations on the work of Federico García Lorca-POET IN NEW YORK and LORCA! DUENDE!

GLIMPSE: THE ART OF DYING is an immersion into the world of the dead and the living, and also on the process between the two. Death itself, its expansion, depth and magnificence is considered here as a study and compilation of different perspectives (or religions), namely Buddhist, Christian and Sufi. The show is divided into three acts: Life, the Between and the Death of a Dancer.

Carolina Fonseca uses techniques inspired by Flamenco, Sufi dance and Gypsy dances from Eastern Europe, Russia and Hungary, temporizing and breaking up in time and in space, what could be considered the conventions and traditions of these cultures, into new languages and forms brought to our times. Besides these influences and references, GLIMPSE is also based on literary works such as Glimpse after Glimpse by Sogyal Rinpoche, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche, The Wheel of Time by Carlos Castaneda, The Book of Prayers, the Holy Death in Mexico by Rodriguez dos Reis and Sufi Poetry, the Loving Death by Sufi Rumi.

"Carolina Fonseca creates poetic dance pieces that showcase her raw power and intense beauty," said Orietta Crispino, Theaterlab's Artistic Director. "I am thrilled for her return to New York and our stage."

The creative team includes Carolina Fonseca (choreographer/performer), Hamidreza Maleki (live music interpretation) and Pedro Maia (video installation).

Performances of GLIMPSE: THE ART OF DYING run April 22 through 24, Wednesday through Friday at 8:00 pm at Theaterlab (357 West 36th St., 3rd Floor; Between 8th & 9th Ave.; Subway: A/C/E or 1/2/3 to 34th St.). Tickets are $20 ($15 for students with valid ID) and may be purchased in advance at www.theaterlabnyc.com.
