Cavalier Galleries presents Contemporary Realism, a group exhibition focusing on the American Realism movement by highlighting the gallery's diverse stable of artists.

Realism has been an important movement since its original inception at the turn of the 19th century in France when artists such as Gustav Corbet began depicting images that reflected what they considered to be real life. This new movement rebelled against the often idealized and romanticized scenes illustrated by their contemporaries. It was carried on in America by the Ashcan school, which included such artists as George Bellows, Robert Henri, and Edward Hopper. Realist paintings were meant to reflect a social commentary on the world which the artists experienced around them.

While revolutionary for its time, the popularity of Realism fell in favor of the modern art movement that dominated the first half of the 20th century. It was not until the 1970s that realism returned to the forefront of the American art scene, mirroring its original movement, by rebelling against the Abstract Expressionist movement. Since its resurgence, realism has developed and evolved into a multitude of focuses including; photo realism, hyper realism and surrealism, as well as futurist and magical realism.

The Contemporary Realism exhibition will integrate a diverse group of realist artists, showing the range of the genre through landscape, figurative, still life, and trompe l'oeil paintings.

Featured artists include: Michael Aviano, Robert Zappalorti, Douglas Wiltraut, Joel Carson Jones, Paul Oxborough, Dan Greene, John D'Antonio, William Harrison and Paul McCormack.
