Busch Hosts Innovative Theatre Awards for Off-Off-Bway, Sept. 19

The New York Innovative Theatre Awards will be held on September 19th at 7 PM at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (101 Christopher Street).

Hosted by Charles Busch (Psycho Beach Party, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife), the evening will feature presenters such as composer/lyricist Michael John LaChiusa, director Tom O'Horgan, director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall, actress Julie Halston, Tony Award-winning actor Dan Fogler, set desigener Heidi Ettinger, lighting designer Brian MacDevitt, performance artist Penny Arcade, director Erica Gould, sound designer Nevin Steinberg, producer David Stone, playwright Doric Wilson, and Bob Heidi.

Awards will be presented in the following categories: Outstanding Actress & Actor in a Lead Role, Outstanding Actress & Actor in a Featured Role, Outstanding Solo Performance, Outstanding Director, Outstanding Original Music, Outstanding Sound Design, Lighting Design, Set Design and Costume Design, Outstanding Original Full-length Script & Outstanding Original Short Script, Outstanding Choreography/Movement, Outstanding Ensemble, Outstanding Production of a Play, Outstanding Production of a Musical and Outstanding Performance Art Production.

In addition, a number of special awards will be handed out--The Stewardship Award will be awarded to LaMama founder Ellen Stewart, puppeteer Basil Twist will receive the Artistic Achievement Award and The Inverse Theatre Company will receive the Caffe Cino Fellowship Award.

"The New York IT Awards is a not-for-profit arts organization supporting Off-Off-Broadway, by celebrating and recognizing extraordinary Off-Off-Broadway theatre, nurturing the community of Off-Off-Broadway and honoring the artistic heritage of Off-Off-Broadway. The NYITA organization recognizes the unique and essential role Off-Off-Broadway plays in contributing to American and global culture. We believe that publicly recognizing excellence in Off-Off-Broadway will expand audience awareness and appreciation of the full New York theatre experience," according to press notes. The Executive Directors of the New York IT Awards are Jason Bowcutt, Shay Gines & Nick Micozzi. This year's awards will be sponsored by Back Stage Magazine.
