What makes a hit Broadway musical? Not even the pros really know, as the cast and creative team of The Band's Visit proved in a recent conversation with Richard Ridge.

"Intellectually we know it's true. Work on something with integrity and don't worry about pleasing the widest possible audience... that's what you're supposed to do. But it's really hard. You're always running a gauntlet of your own doubts and fears," said book writer Itamar Moses. "When we were working on this show, before it was off Broadway and even when we were downtown, I don't think any of us ever anticipated the journey that it ended up having."
