BWW Reviews: Lady Bunny Gives Hair-Raising Performance in ‘THAT AIN’T NO LADY!’

By:

Watch out Lady Gaga... Lady Bunny is back, and her bouffant wig is bigger than Times Square!

In her first one-woman show in 10 years, Lady Bunny makes a fierce comeback to a packed crowd at La Escuelita Cabaret Theatre.  While this self-professed "trash-talking filthy sewer mouth[ed]" drag queen keeps the audience deep into the gutters, only three blocks away, Mary Poppins is flying over the heads of children everywhere.  Gotta love New York.

Between the disco lights, shirtless bar staff, and casual, club-like atmosphere, you immediately realize this isn't going to be your typical cabaret.  Lady Bunny knows how to get her audience up and going.  Right away, she shouts, "Let me hear you scream like a bunch of teenage girls at a Justin Bieber concert!"  She then alternates between hilarious Laugh-In style comedy routines, utterly raunchy pop song parodies, and pornographic videos on large screens.  90 minutes of pure, unsterile filth... and not a single person complains.  In fact, those dirty smirks will be left on everyone's faces long after the show ends.

Some of her victims are Lady Gaga, Lindsay Lohan, Katy Perry, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Christina "Hag-uliera," Cher, and continuous tributes to Amy Winehouse.  She even graces us with her own version of Chicago's "All That 'JIZZ'", as well as her memorable rendition of "Tomorrow" from Annie.  Charles Strouse would be proud.  Not every joke is filthy, though, and she even throws in some political rhetoric.  A couple of her more printable jokes are, "What's the difference between February and Amy Winehouse?  February makes it to 28."   And yet another, "Lindsay Lohan was delighted to be back in court today.  It was her first callback in years."

If you want to have a fun night of something other than a Disney show or another classic theatre remake, then go see Lady Bunny.  Don't let the oversized bouffant, fabulous sequins dresses, and high heels fool you, Lady Bunny 'AIN'T no lady'!  She's a "trash-talking, filthy sewer mouth[ed]" drag queen who'll have you walking out with enough dirty jokes to fill up the room at any boring office holiday party... And she wouldn't have it any other way.

That Ain't No Lady! continues on Tuesdays in an open-ended run at La Escuelita Cabaret Theater, 301 West 39th Street, Manhattan; (212) 631-0588.  For tickets, log onto www.ladybunny.net
