Interview: Poet Tyrone Huston

By:

Tyrone Huston is one of the many poets will be performing Saturday, September 26th at The 6th Edition of My "Citywide Youth Open Mic" in Buffalo, New York.

MCL: Do you write Prose or just poetry?

TH: I write both. It depends on what I'm using as inspiration at the time E. music, radio etc

MCL: How did you get into poetry?

TH: I got into poetry in my 10th grade English class. The teacher had assigned us to write a free verse poem, and I wrote down the first thing that came to mind. Spoken Word came into play after watching The Def Jam Poetry series on HBO At home.

MCL: Some Poetry influences?

TH: Definitely Langston Hughes. I loved his incorporation of Musical elements and southern dialect into some of his poetry.

MCL: Describe your poetry?

My poetry is all about insight perspective and understanding. For example some of my Spoken Word Performances talk about the lives of those with disabilities. Having one myself, I use poetry to offer perspective into lives lived unseen.

MCL: What's the Buffalo New York scene like?

TH: Absolutely overflowing!!! I've met so many artistically gifted people. The fact that I'm a part of it myself makes the experience of networking more amazing!!

MCL: Any Local poets who helped you grow?

TH: Absolutely! We have a local poet that goes by GOODNE$$. As of the last year she has always opened her events and stages to me as well as helped in my exposure and promotion. Another poet, Lissa Roads, has been an amazing poetic help through conversation. Her readings are honest and truthful and so I aspire to be truthful to and with myself as an artist as she does. One other local poet I have huge respect for goes by Lazyrus. It's not just his ability, but the sense of being equal he brings. The comradely and understanding keep me reminded that I have much to offer as a poet. Those are three poets who help me stay inspired because of their sense of Brotherhood inspite of their further experience.

MCL: Some of your Favorite Venues and why?

TH: One of my favorite venues is called WORDISM, a non-competitive open mic hosted by Jumanne Pitts at the Em Tea cup Cafe. I love that there's no competition or judging. Just gathering in the name of art and expression. Definitely have to include The Gypsy Parlor on Grant Street. The atmosphere is always beautiful. I also Iove attending the Citywide Youth Open Mic hosted by GOODNE$$. I've been a recurring artist but more importantly, I see firsthand the talented youth we have in our city.

MCL: What's going on in 2015-2016 for you?

TH: Hopefully performances in front of larger audiences, and collaborations.
