India’s best-loved Odissi dancer, Sujata Mohapatra, dances to live music that sings of love, secular & divine, based on the Gita Govinda love-story of Krishna & Radha. in the most sensuous of Indian classical dances, showing the human body at its most beautiful.
Sujata Mohapatra, a disciple of the great guru Kelucharan, is the most eminent Odissi dancer today. She has became a national icon for Odissi dance , which she dances to live music.
Odissi (Orissi) is the most ancient and beautiful form of India’s 8 classical dance forms. Its home is the state of Orissa on the east coast. Its themes are love in various manifestations – secular and divine. The powerful music, provided by an ensemble of 4: Soumya Ranjan ( flute), Ramesh Chander (violin), Rupak Kumar (vocal), and Ekalabya Muduli ( double-headed tuned drum – Pakhawaj)- is based on lyrical poetry, mainly Jaydeva’s Sanskrit poem Geeta Govinda, which celebrates the loves of Krishna and Radha of legend. Its distinguishing features are Tribhangi ( 3-part break) independent movement of the head, chest and pelvis, and the square posture, as seen in Indian temple sculpture.
