In January 2019, Interlochen Center for the Arts will stage a second workshop of the new musical The Journey That Saved Curious George with book by Jen Shuber and Music and Lyrics by Nicky Phillips.

The Journey That Saved Curious George has been developed at the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony at Goodspeed Musicals, the Canadian Music Theatre Project at Sheridan College and was chosen for the ASCAP/Stephen Schwartz Workshop. Nicky and Jen were also awarded the Margret and H.A. Rey Residency from the Curious George Foundation.

The Journey That Saved Curious George is inspired by the book of the same name written by Louise Borden. Curious George, the beloved monkey is famous for his narrow escape from danger in his well-known stories. What is not known is how he symbolically safeguarded his own creators in times of danger. Margret and H.A. Rey, the writers of Curious George, were Jews who became refugees when they had to flee Paris in 1940.They had to leave all of their belongings behind but managed to escape with the Curious George manuscript moments before the Nazi's occupied the city. They brought Curious George safely to America narrowly escaping danger themselves. It's a story of love, hope and how this little monkey was introduced to millions of people across the world!
