Showcase of Most Talented Student Playwrights in the UK to be Held at Bush Theatre

As part of the final stage of The Student Guide to Writing: Playwriting, the Bush Theatre, MA Dramatic Writing at Drama Centre London at Central Saint Martins, Writers at Work Productions and Oberon Books have announced details of a showcase of some of the UK's most talented student playwrights.

The student writers were found via a nationwide search run as part of The Student Guide to Writing: Playwriting competition and include:

Vee Tames, a 17 year old student from Colchester, who wrote her first play using the competition's lesson plans

Monique Geraghty, an undergraduate student from Cheshire, who also wrote her first play using the competition's lesson plans

Titilola Ige, a postgraduate student from Croydon whose winning play has subsequently had a reading with Tamasha theatre company

Plus emerging writers:

Miriam Battye, from Manchester, who has subsequently been chosen for the BBC's New Talent Hotlist

Mufaro Makubika, an emerging writer from Nottingham

The showcase will take place at the Bush Theatre on May 9th at 2pm, alongside a panel discussion on the importance of teaching and how to improve arts education.

Jennifer Tuckett, Director of the Student Guide to Writing, said: "We received thousands of applications for The Student Guide to Writing: Playwriting competition and we hope this showcase will offer an opportunity to see the work of 5 of the most talented student and emerging writers in the UK. As university writing courses expand, I think one of the problems has been assisting writers in making the transition from studying to having careers as writers - we hope the showcase will help bring to attention and provide a credit for these 5 winning writers. As students pay higher fees for these courses due to government changes in funding, it's important to consider how these courses can best help them. We hope the showcase and the panel discussion on how best to train writers will help address this issue".

The Student Guide to Writing: Playwriting competition ran last year, inspired by issues such as EBACC not including arts subjects, the decline of training on specialist subjects as part of PGC training, and the gap between education and the skills needed by the creative industries.
