As always, a busy year for revivals of classic plays, but somehow the Olivier panel got it down to a final quartet.

Ibsen's Ghosts, starring Lesley Manville, began at the Almeida before moving to the Trafalgar Studios, and Richard Eyre's vision is recognised with this nomination.

Adrian Lester and Rory Kinnear starred in the National's Othello, also nominated; and Anna Chancellor and Toby Stephens were a very different pair of protagonists in the Chichester production of Private Lives, which transferred to the Gielgud Theatre.

And the final play of the four is Rufus Norris's revival of The Amen Corner, another National Theatre production.
