With the holiday season in full view, ArtsPower’s A Little Princess Christmas, a musical based on the classic novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, tells the inspiring riches-to-rags story of a young girl whose one Christmas wish is to have her father return home to her.
More than anything in the world, Sara Crewe loves her father. But when Captain Crewe must leave for the war, he places Sara in the care of Miss Minchin at the Select Seminary for Young Ladies in
London. Sara tries her best to be brave, but she misses her father very much.
From the moment she arrives at Miss Minchin’s school, Sara enchants her schoolmates with her fanciful imagination. Sara strikes up an unlikely friendship with a servant girl, Becky, that sustains both of them through the adversity they will later face.
Soon after meeting Becky, Sara learns that her father is missing in action, leaving her penniless and orphaned. Miss Minchin forces her to become a servant to pay off the debt her father still owes the school. Relying on the friendship of Becky and the mysterious Ram Das from India, who works at the hospital next door to the school, Sara must wait until Christmas morning to find
out if her Christmas wish has come true.
Adapted for the stage by playwright and lyricist Greg Gunning and composer Richard DeRosa, A Little Princess Christmas tells the remarkable story of a little girl who remains rich in kindness and goodwill even when her pockets are empty.
