One year later, Eva Grove was hired to head up a dance program to augment the skill development needs of the team and expand the program to offer dance classes. Baton Twirling is an American originated sport and that originated with drum majors twirling a mace in front of large marching bands in the 30's and 40's. Drum majors competed intensely for coveted awards. Mace twirling evolved into smaller equipment for young women which became known as a baton. The drum majorettes eventually began competing as intensely as the drum majors. Today the major and majorettes who compete are more commonly called "baton twirlers". Although the sport of baton twirling began as a male only sport, it now includes both males and females of all ages.
