Enjoy the High Energy Tradition Of Step, Clap, And Spoken Word With Step Afrika!

Step Afrika! the first professional dance company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping is coming to Stowe, Wednesday, February 6 at 7pm. Step Afrika! draws on percussive dance styles that grew out of African American communities, African traditional dance, and influences from a variety of other dance and art forms. The company incorporates movement, words, and sounds to communicate allegiance, with a special focus on teamwork and cross-cultural understanding. Though rooted in raw movement, Step Afrika's award-winning performances are much more than dance shows; they integrate songs, storytelling, humor, and audience participation in a blend of technique and agility that's guaranteed to drop more than a few jaws.

Stepping is a rising art form and an important part of America's artistic and cultural heritage. In stepping, the body is used as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds through a combination of footsteps, claps and the spoken word.

Step Afrika! is evolving the dance form to include other styles, such as Tap, Modern and Hip Hop, and introducing stepping to new audiences around the world. Step Afrika! was founded in 1994. It now ranks as one of the top ten African American dance companies in the United States.

Step Afrika! promotes stepping as an educational tool for young people, focusing on teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding. The dance team will be performing as part of the Spruce Peak Arts Student Matinee series the morning of Feb 6; this morning show is sold out. Local school students will spend the morning understanding what is rhythm and dance; and how they come together using the body as an instrument, Step Afrika! performers create many rhythms while they dance!
