The Arches presents major new Vital Spark commission Whatever Gets You Through The Night, an ambitious multi-disciplinary music and theatre performance which previews at the venue tonight 26th June 2012 and run from Wednesday 27th – Friday 29th June 2012.

This exciting and unique multi-media concept, which involves more than 20 Scottish artists, will feature new writing by some of the country's most distinctive novelists, poets and playwrights, an album's worth of original music by acclaimed musicians, some of whom will perform live in the show, actors interacting with the words and music, visuals by Kim Beveridge, gorgeous aerial work, and a film directed by Daniel Warren.

Whatever Gets You Through the Night will feature exclusive words and music from Errors, Alan Bissett, Rachel Sermanni, Withered Hand, Annie Griffin, Meursault, David Greig, RM Hubbert, Wounded Knee, Alan Spence, Ricky Ross, Conquering Animal Sound, Emma Pollock, Kirstin Innes, Isabel Wright, Swimmer One, Bigg Taj, Stef Smith, EuGene Kelly, Douglas Maxwell, Talkingmakesnosense and David Ireland.

Created by Cora Bissett, director of the 2012 Olivier Award winning Roadkill, with Swimmer One and David Greig, the show will be quite unlike anything else - a visual and aural banquet blending circus, cabaret, and a host of stories - all of which take place across Scotland between the hours of midnight and 4am. A heartfelt goodbye on the shore of Loch Lomond, a Skype affair between two people who have never met, a man searching for a lover in 'the palace of light', a character lost in a virtual reality game world, and an homage to the joys of chips and cheese. Meet lost souls, party animals and dreamers in a snapshot of an entire nation at its most vulnerable and revealing.

As well as the live show, this unique, groundbreaking project also takes the form of a book, an album (released by Biphonic Records) and a film directed by Daniel Warren which will premiere at the Summerhall venue during this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe on Thursday 23rd August at 10.30pm before going on tour.

Jackie Wylie, Artistic Director, The Arches said: "'This exciting new concept brings together a gloriously eclectic mix of Scotland's most original writing voices. Showcasing the breadth of writing and performance talent across the country, the show features the work of gifted playwrights, cult and highly regarded music artists, daring aerial performers and seasoned actors. Cora and the team behind this work have sought out the very best performers and this really is what the Arches does best – a great example of the type of bold, cross disciplinary work that, with its many experiences and spectacles, plays to all of our strengths as a multi-faceted arts space"

In addition to all of the multi-media elements, we'd also like to involve you, the audience. We are inviting people from anywhere in the country to submit your night-time photos, which will be incorporated into the live performance. They can be of anything at all, but the aim is to capture a moment in time. Be inventive, be inspired. What happens in those late night hours which make them so distinct from the daylight hours? If you'd like to submit your picture simply upload them directly to the Whatever Gets You Through The Night Facebook page, or email throughthenight@gmail.com. We don't need any description or explanation, just a simple caption: the time and place the photo was taken (e.g. 3.30am, Falkirk High St).
