This Christmas Southampton's Nuffield is producing an enchanting new version of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale The Snow Queen, featuring new songs, magical staging and a delightfully humorous retelling of this timeless story that will melt your heart. The adaptation is written by acclaimed TV comedy writer, Georgia Pritchett (The Thick of It, Veep, Miranda), with music composed by Dougal Irvine. Sarah Tipple (Dirty Dancing: The Musical, West End and UK Tour), directs the production.

The popular Danish tale tells the story about the wicked Snow Queen's attempt to kidnap a young boy named Kai in the frozen north, and his stumpy, grumpy best friend Gerda's quest to find him. Along the way, this unlikely hero meets new friends who help her, and discovers the truth behind the mysterious Snow Queen and why she lives locked up in solitude in her Icy Palace.

The cast is Rob Castell (We Will Rock You, international tour; Playing It Straight, E4); Joyce Greenaway (Moments, Chichester Festival Theatre; Truth and Reconciliation, The Royal Court); Jessie Hart (Arthur & George, ITV; The Snow Queen marks Jessie's professional stage debut); Natasha Jayetileke (Hollyoaks, Channel 4; The Lion King, West End); Nicola Munns (Dancing on the Edge, BBC/Ruby Films; Call the Midwife, Neal Street Productions/BBC); Jack Shalloo (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Theatre Royal Drury Lane; The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, ITV); Jos Slovick (Once The Musical, Dublin and West End; Love Story, Chichester Festival Theatre); Jerome Van Den Berghe (The Snow Gorilla, Rose Theatre Kingston; The Mikado, Tabard Theatre).

Multi award-winning comedy writer Georgia Pritchett adapts the story. Georgia has created and written for a host of hit television comedies, including Miranda, Veep, The Thick of It, Spitting Image and Life of Riley. She's also worked on feature films, including Wallace and Gromit's The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Her first children's book launches in spring 2015.

The production's original music is created by award-winning composer, lyricist and writer Dougal Irvine. His hit musical comedy Departure Lounge was nominated as Best New Musical at the WhatsOnStage Awards and his songs have featured at three WhatsonStage Award winners concerts.

This co-production marks the start of a new partnership between Royal & Derngate, Northampton, and Nuffield, which will see them collaboratively commission, develop and produce annual adaptations of well-loved children's titles which will play at both theatres across two Christmas seasons. The Snow Queen will play at Royal & Derngate next Christmas, while Nuffield and Royal & Derngate's co-production of Merlin, by Ella Hickson (writer of the RSC's 2013 Christmas show Wendy and Peter Pan) will be re-staged in Southampton next year.

Tickets for The Snow Queen are available from Nuffield's Box Office: 023 8067 1771 / nuffieldtheatre.co.uk
