Leyla, the final living member of an old Ottoman family, is forced to leave her house in which she lived the seventy-six years of her life. Her house is a small building situated at one corner of the garden of Bosnali Yalisi, an old Istanbul mansion that once belonged to her own family. Yusuf, whose grandfathers had served as gardeners in the yali for generations, runs to Leyla’s help and invites her to stay in his house in Cihangir. Having lost her house, Leyla feels as if she’s betraying her past, her memories, the most important source of meaning in her life. At Yusuf’s house, she meets Roxy, Yusuf’s girlfirend, who receives her with a very unwelcoming attitude expressing clearly that she doesn’t want her in the house. Roxy is a third generation migrant who grew up in Germany and became a hip-hop singer. During her youth, she was torn between two cultures and she had serious problems of belonging and identity. She had survived but only at the expense of turning out to be a difficult, hard person. Roxy continues her hostile behaviour towards Leyla for some time but living together gradually brings all the inhabitants of the house closer. Leyla surprises them, especially Roxy, in many ways, with her knowledge, calmness, humility and generosity. Slowly, Roxy gets more and more interested in her. In the end, she even joins Yusuf in his efforts to help Leyla to get her house back. Indeed, it isn’t only Roxy who is changing, Leyla is changing too. As the two women get to know each other, they discover new sides to themselves and they grow up.

The new owners of the Bosnali Yalisi are Omer Cevheroglu and his wife Necla who are among the new rich of Istanbul. Omer’s father Ali Yekta Bey is another key character in the novel. Ali Yekta Bey’s father and grandfathers have for generations served in the great mansions of Istanbul and Ali Yekta Bey continued the family tradition. Like his ancestors, he very much respects his job and tries to conduct his duties in the best way. However, he has his ambitions too and his biggest dream is to become a master one day. The new yali that his son just acquired signals for him the start of his new life, this is the house in which finally he is going to be the master. Towards the end of the novel, the paths of Leyla and Ali Yekta cross and the events take an unexpected turn.
