Opening Night of the 2023 season of the Stratford Festival is almost upon us, and for the first time in nine years, the Festival is staging a production of KING LEAR. A few weeks ago, BroadwayWorld had the opportunity to chat with the production’s director, Kimberley Rampersad about her vision for this production, what it means to be doing this show now, the complexity of the piece, the stellar company she is working with, and why Lear is a favourite of many a Shakespeare fan.
The Shaw Festival has announced its 61st season. A mix of classics, real hidden gems, new works and a variety of voices will be seen, heard and experienced in both their indoor and outdoor spaces next season.
The Shaw Festival welcomed the grant it received from the Government of Ontario's Community Building Fund - Operating stream in 2021. The relief funding of $250,000, delivered by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, helped sustain the Festival's operations and allowed for the creation of new experiences and programs.
Upon receiving a $150,000 Capital grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) in 2019, the Shaw Festival immediately put it to good use. Many of The Shaw's amenities have benefitted from this infusion of funds. The support the Festival received from OTF ensures its theatres and spaces are ready for the anticipated return of audiences and company members.
The Shaw Festival plans to return to the stage in May with a reduced 2021 season. Many of the anticipated productions originally scheduled for 2020 will now appear as part of the 2021 playbill.
