AMERICAN IDOL Recap: Tearful Elimination Sends Home Contender Far Too SoonAMERICAN IDOL Recap: Tearful Elimination Sends Home Contender Far Too Soon
by Matt Tamanini - April 10, 2014

This week AMERICAN IDOL welcomed back Season XIII's Top-8 for the second week in a row. This time they were mentored by the incredibly professional and discerning David Cook (especially compared to IDOL's 'full-time” mentor, Randy Jackson, who followed Cook around like a lost puppy all night). The Season 7 Champ brought a focused specificity to each performer's rehearsal, and in most cases that resulted in enjoyable performances. (more...)

Just as it did last week, tonight's AMERICAN IDOL featured the Top-8 finalists. After an ill-advised use of the sole judge's save, Sam Woolf remained in the competition long enough to be mentored by former IDOL champ David Cook for this week's 80's theme. With the obvious negligence of 'full-time' mentor Randy Jackson, it is staggering to see how much progress can be made with a mentor who is actively engaged in helping the finalists become better singers, performers, and artists. When last we left our Season XIII AMERICAN IDOL finalists, an uncomfortable amount of confetti was raining down on 17-year-old Sam Woolf, who had survived America's vote by garnering the season's only judge's save. As the show went off the air host Ryan Seacrest informed us that Top-8 Week Part 2 would focus on the songs of the 1980s. Again, first-year Executive Producer Per Blankens has opted to give the contestants an extremely open-ended theme. Thus far, the strategy has proved beneficial for audiences and Idols alike, as both have been exposed to songs outside the normally limited Reality Show set-list. (more...)

Coming off one of the strongest episodes of the season, everyone expected this elimination show to be exceedingly difficult, especially considering the dwindling number of opportunities to use the season's single judges' save. However, when it came down to crunch time, the judges' decision didn't seem to be all that difficult. (more...)

As he has been doing throughout Season XIII, new AMERICAN IDOL Executive Producer Per Blankens has again thrown a curveball of a theme at the Top-8. Instead of the well-warn 'Motown' and 'Burt Bacharach' Weeks, for the first time in IDOL history, the finalists all performed their initial audition songs. (more...)

The new producers of AMERICAN IDOL are again turning the idea of a theme week on its head. While in the past they have had contestants repeat previous performances, for the first time in the show's history, all of the Top-8 will be revisiting the songs that earned them their Golden Ticket to Hollywood, in the first ever Audition Song Week. Last Thursday when I heard about this week's theme, 'I'm with the Band,' I have to admit that I just didn't get it. However, now that I've seen how the IDOL Powers-That-Be implemented it on stage, I still really don't get it. The contestants sing with Ricky Minor and his band every week, however, to switch it up, this week the finalists will be singing with Ricky Minor and his band ON STAGE. (more...)

Tonight's theme on AMERICAN IDOL was replete with symbolism reminding us that being in the Top-10 of something is a big deal, no matter what that something is! After two weeks of appropriately vague themes allowed the neophyte contestants to explore their individual artistry, I became more than a little apprehensive when Ryan said the top-11 would be singing the “Songs of the Cinema.” The lame OCEAN'S ELEVEN cold open, completed by the cheesiest “This is AMERICAN IDOL” ever to come out of Seacrest's mouth, made me worry that this could be a cheesetastic disaster. However, I forgot that the majority of this year's remaining contestants have shown a surprising talent for avoiding the cliché, and made this the best week of IDOL all season! (more...)

For the first time in AMERICAN IDOL's 13th season, I can honestly say, that I don't know that anyone deserves to go home. Sure, not all of the songs last night were perfect, but they all were marked improvements from each previous live performance. In fact, the contestant who was by far the worst last night (Majesty), had been one of the favorites coming in, so I am torn, and a little nervous. (more...)

Continuing last night's theme, this week's AMERICAN IDOL elimination episode opened with the Top-12 singing “Home”, the breakout hit from this week's IDOL alum guest performer, Phillip Phillips. Well, after last week's mini-disaster of a top-13 week, there was not much that American Idol could have thrown out on stage tonight that wouldn't have been an improvement. The home-visit episode, where the final three contestants receive ticker tape parades in their respective hometowns, has been the most emotional in each of IDOL's first 12 seasons. So apparently, new producer Per Blankens decided to use some of that emotion in the early stages of this season. While both the vocals and performances were stark improvements over last week, I'm not sure that this episode is going to harken back to the Golden Days of AMERICAN IDOL's dominance. (more...)

There have been a number of noticeable improvements to Season XIII of AMERICAN IDOL, including the inclusion of the best judge in the show's history, Harry Connick Jr., and the Boot Camp featuring Idol-made stars Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry. On the other hand, the new Rush Week was all kinds of disappointment; from Randy Jackson's not-so-triumphant return as the show's new mentor to the contestants having to sprint from their holding chamber to the stage to perform (mostly poorly) just moments after having their fates announced. Unfortunately, that unevenness reared its ugly head again in this week's Top-13 show. (more...)
