BWW Review: Shakespeare Festival St. Louis' Fantastic A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
by Chris Gibson - June 18, 2016

It's always fun to take in the many treats available at Shakespeare Festival St. Louis each year in Forest Park, and I'm not just talking about the food and drink stands, but also all the performers, mini-versions of the show, etc, that take place before the main attraction begins (arrive early). And,with the weather just a touch cooler there's no excuse not to attend, Besides, it's truly special watching a classic work by the immortal bard under the stars. This year a most apropos example of his work, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, takes flight in the wooded confines, exactly the place where the action of this play occurs. It's a match made in heaven, and it's also a work that, as I've stated in other reviews, is a great introduction to the playwright. So, by all means, bring the family and enjoy this fantastic production.

BWW Review: DISTRICT MERCHANTS a Thought-Provoking Retelling of Shakespeare at Folger Theatre
by Pamela Roberts - June 13, 2016

DISTRICT MERCHANTS, Aaron Posner's new adaptation of Shakespeare's THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, explores the 'other-ness' of being outside the white male stations of power. Setting the work in post-Civil War Washington, D.C., the premiere takes a uniquely American look at race, religion, class and gender. DISTRICT MERCHANTS at the Folger Theatre is an important and compelling work that deftly balances humor among weightier, thought-provoking moments.

BWW Review: Shakespeare Theatre Company Presents a Bold New THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
by Barbara Johnson - May 26, 2016

What a time for THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. It's a brave choice given its divisive, misogynistic text, but Shakespeare Theatre Company pulls it off under the bold direction of Ed Sylvanus Iskander. With an all-male cast, and featuring the contemporary pop music of Tony winner Duncan Sheik, this is Shakespeare with a decidedly modern sensibility.

by Roy Tan - May 16, 2016

Howard Barker's shocking and risque take on Hamlet has its first major London revival at Theatre N16 this summer since its premiere in 2002. Reinterpreting Shakespeare's classic from the perspective of Hamlet's mother, this is a striking exploration of female sexuality and emancipation - but also a punky, filthy analysis of lust. BWW Review: AS YOU LIKE IT Is the Right Amount of a Good Thing
by Marietta Lunceford - May 13, 2016

One of the least talked about and yet most wonderful things about our area is the Alabama School of Fine Arts, situated in downtown Birmingham. It boasts the beautiful Dorothy Jemison Day Theatre. Although I have been to this theatre several times, today was the first time to be in the building during a school day and in the theatre to see the kids from ASFA perform. They are performing Shakespeare's AS YOU LIKE IT this weekend and it is worth your time to support them.

JONATHAN FULLER (recently returned from a month's Fellowship at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London) directs one of the Bard's most crowd-pleasing shows, As You Like It. Appropriately named, Shakespeare indeed wrote this one with a wide audience in mind. Whether you like secret plots, disguises, fights, comedy, witty dialogue, and love, Love, LOVE, this was written to have something you like in it. This production will be utilizing techniques learned by Mr. Fuller at The Globe the is past fall

by Ellen Dostal - May 13, 2016

Attempting to produce all of Shakespeare's plays would be daunting task for any theatre company but one young group of actors has continued to stay the course. Over a ten-year period, the Porters of Hellsgate have produced twenty of the playwright's thirty-eight plays, steadily working toward their goal of being the first in Los Angeles to mount the entire canon. This season, they tackle three at once with HENRY VI, Parts 1, 2 & 3.

BWW Review: Seattle Shakes' Gimmicky ROMEO AND JULIET Lacks Passion
by Jay Irwin - May 9, 2016

A few months back another group in Seattle put up an immersive production of "Romeo and Juliet" that blew me away and finally gave me the chance to see a completely solid production that I liked. But even while watching that I knew that Seattle Shakespeare Company would be closing out their season with their own intimate production of the show and I worried that the chances of getting another great production might be tempting fate or the theater Gods or the odds or whatever. Well unfortunately my fears were well founded as this new staging, while having a few stand out supporting performances, ultimately falls flat with a severe lack of passion or love (crucial for a love story) and an overarching theme that at best feels confusing and tacked on and at worst, pretentious.
