Fugue Photos - Off-Broadway

Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist Quiara Alegria Hudes takes a poignant look at the way war permeates young men's lives in a play spanning three generations of the same Puerto Rican-American family. Elliot is a Marine Corps hero back from Iraq with an injured leg and a Purple Heart. His Pop was wounded in Vietnam; his flute-playing Grandpop fought in Korea. In a fugue-like form, different wars and different tales are strung together as Ginny, his mother, seeks to reconcile the disparate parts and heal emotional wounds. Hudes' spare, intense, and poetically resonant play speaks to the personal cost of war across the ages.

Laguna Playhouse Artistic Director Ann E. Wareham is thrilled to announce the third show in the Laguna Playhouse 2016-2017 season, CHAPATTI, written by Christian O'Reilly and directed by David Ellenstein, based on the direction of Judith Ivey. "I just fell in love with this play and the beautiful and quirky love story at its center.  I think our audiences are about to fall in love with it too," says Wareham.  CHAPATTI will begin previews on Wednesday, January 11; will open on Sunday, January 15 at 5:30pm and will run through Sunday, January 29, 2016 at the Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach.

The multiple award-winning Echo Theater Company, named "Best Bet for Ballsy Original Plays" by the LA Weekly, continues its 2015 season with two Los Angeles premieres scheduled to run in repertory. Row After Row by Jessica Dickey (The Amish Project) opens on April 25 at 5 p.m., with A Small Fire by Obie Award-winner Adam Bock (The Drunken City, The Receptionist) opening that same evening at 8 p.m.

Teatro Vista, Chicago's largest non-profit Equity Latino theater company, will launch the company's first season as a resident company at Victory Gardens Theater with the world premiere of White Tie Ball, Martin Zimmerman's new play about two brothers, one easily identified as Latino, another who isn't, and the moral and emotional dilemmas they find themselves in. Walnut Street Theatre opens its landmark 205th season with the groundbreaking 21st century musical IN THE HEIGHTS. Directed by Bruce Lumpkin, with choreography by Michelle Gaudette, this exhilarating musical about chasing your dreams and finding your true home is currently in previews and opens on September 11th, running through October 20th on the WST Mainstage. Husband-and-wife duo - two-time Tony Award-winner Katie Finneran (most recently on Broadway in 'Annie') and Darren Goldstein ('Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson') hosted the 15th Anniversary Benefit for the Off-Broadway theatre company Page 73 Productions last week at City Winery (155 Varick Street) in Manhattan. Rivendell Theatre Ensemble (RTE), Chicago's only Equity theatre devoted to the work of women theatre artists, is proud to announce Stefanie Zadravec's The Electric Baby as the third and final production of its 2012-2013 Season of Reinvention. RTE Artistic Director and founder Tara Mallen directs the Chicago premiere, now through June 22 at the new Rivendell Theatre, 5779 N. Ridge. On May 11, Becky Ann Baker (GOOD PEOPLE, "Freaks and Geeks"), Dylan Baker (GOD OF CARNAGE, "Kings"), Christopher Abbott ("Martha Marcy May Marlene," HBO's Girls and 2011 Broadway revival of HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES) took part in the "bake off" portion of Page 73 Productions' Spring Benefit at City Winery (155 Varick Street) in Manhattan. The Public Theater will premiere of FEBRUARY HOUSE, with music and lyrics by Gabriel Kahane and book by Seth Bockley, beginning on Tuesday, May 8 in The Public's Martinson Theater. Directed by Davis McCallum, FEBRUARY HOUSE runs through Sunday, June 10, with an official press opening on Tuesday, May 22. Single tickets, beginning at $80, are on sale now.

PAGE 73 PRODUCTIONS (Liz Jones & Asher Richelli, Executive Directors) will present the New York premiere of Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig's Lidless, recipient of a 'Fringe First' at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and winner of the 2009 Yale Drama Series Award and the Keene Prize for Literature (from the University of Texas, Austin). This Off-Broadway limited engagement at WalkerSpace (46 Walker Street) begins Tuesday, September 20th and continues through Saturday, October 15th only. Opening Night is set for Wednesday, September 28th.

This Off Broadway engagement will be performed at the Ohio Theatre, 66 Wooster Street (between Spring and Broome Streets). Previews begin on Wednesday, October 28, and the official Opening Night will be Monday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. Performances will run through November 21.

It was announced earlier this month that the new musical VANITIES will receive an original cast album. The three-woman cast of the show, which recently performed its New York premiere Off-Broadway at Second Stage Theatre, headed into studio yesterday to record the album for Sh-K-Boom Records.

Goodman Theatre is proud to present the world premiere of Naomi Iizuka's newest work, Ghostwritten directed by Lisa Portes as part of the Goodman's 'Strong Women, Strong Voices' Owen Theatre Series. The 2004 recipient of the Joyce Award, Ghostwritten runs April 4 - May 3, 2009 in the Owen Bruner Theatre. Tickets are $10 - $39. In conjunction with the 'Strong Women, Strong Voices' series, Goodman Theatre partners with six of Chicago's most exciting theater companies focused on presenting and supporting work by women for 'Taking the Stage: A Celebration of Women Making Theater,' a celebration of the distinct voices and visions of women theater artists, and the opportunities and obstacles facing women working in the theater today.
