Are You There? Photos - West End

MY FAIR LADY rolled into town this week, treating Austin to a classic musical of old. And by “of old” I mean lavish costuming, soaring vocals, a beautiful choral ensemble and lush orchestrations performed by a full orchestra. What a treat! In case you missed it over the last 67 years, the musical tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins, a phonetics professor, so that she might transform into a refined lady. The musical is based on George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play 'Pygmalion,' with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. 

How a director envisions a production makes all the difference in its prestation to an audience, starting with casting and continuing through rehearsals and all technical aspects of the show. I spoke with Branda Lock on bringing her vivid imagination and directing skills to George Bernard Show’s PYGMALION, filled with unique Lock-inspired changes to the casting which promise to shed new light on this classic tale of class struggles in Shaw’s time.

For those of us around in the days before the internet took over the shopping world, we can certainly remember the glorious gatherings we attended which were hosted by family or friends in order to sell the newly-invented hard plastic and practically indestructible storage items forever known as Tupperware. For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, or those who want to go back to those fun days, rush over to the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City to be a part of DIXIE'S TUPPERWARE PARTY, the hilarious off-Broadway one-woman comedy written by Kris Andersson starring Dixie Longate which took the theater world by storm and garnered a prestigious Drama Desk Award nomination.

The Omaha Community Playhouse once again takes on a serious subject. PARADE, the Tony Award-winning musical based on the true story of Leo Frank, a Jewish man falsely accused of the rape and murder of a 13 year old girl in Marietta, Georgia, opens tonight and runs through March 11.

Mint Theater (Jonathan Bank, Producing Artistic Director) will present a rare revival -the first in 95 years! - of Stanley Houghton's Hindle Wakes. Performances will continue through February 17th only, at the Clurman Theater at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street). Opening Night is set for January 18th.

Damien Ryan's adaptation of Edmond Rostand's classic romantic comedy, CYRANO DE BERGERAC returns to Sydney for an encore season, 4 years after it won the 2013 Sydney Theatre Award for Best Independent Production, Best Director and Best Actor. With a few cast changes due to availability, most notably Director and Adaptor Damien Ryan stepping into the central role, this fabulous work is set to delight audiences again.

The business side of Mad Cow Theater may be going through a rough patch, but you'd never know it by their recent production of Pygmalion, the beloved tale by George Bernard Shaw. On the Sunday afternoon that I attended the show, the theater was almost full and both the actors and the audience seemed to be having a lovely time (and rightly so as the show was fabulous!).

Last year, none too fragile theater's ON THE LINE was honored by the Cleveland Critics Circle as being the 'Best Non-Musical Production of 1913.' Their production of GIDION'S KNOT establishes itself as a candidate for the award this year!

2013 marks the 100th birthday of two of Toronto's (and the world's) most gorgeous theatres, the Elgin and Wintergarden Theatres on Yonge Street. Roland Auctions of New York City will be selling the estate of legendary playwright, director, and screenwriter, Arthur Laurents on Saturday, June 2, 2012. Mr. Laurents, whose credits include West Side Story, Gypsy, La Cage Aux Folles, Hallelujah, Baby and The Way We Were, amongst many others, had a long and distinguished career, both on Broadway and in Hollywood.
