BWW Reviews: A Jolly Old Time at CHRISTMAS WITH THE CRAWFORDSBWW Reviews: A Jolly Old Time at CHRISTMAS WITH THE CRAWFORDS
by Finny (Amanda Finn) - Dec 5, 2014

Nothing says Christmas like watching Mommie Dearest descend the stairs in four inch heels, a robe, sheer pantyhose, and a smug grin of self-satisfaction.This holiday tradition is true, however, for the members of the Crawford family in StageQ's recent production of Christmas with the Crawfords written by Richard Winchester and Mark Sargent. Based loosely on the memoir made film 'Mommie Dearest' written by Joan Crawford's daughter Christina and combined with a menagerie of guest stars of a bygone era, this is a comedy just bursting with eccentricities. BWW Reviews: Lyric Music Theater Essays OLIVER! RevivalBWW Reviews: Lyric Music Theater Essays OLIVER! Revival
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Nov 24, 2014

In this season of ubiquitous productions of A Christmas Carol, a production of Lionel Bart's Oliver! comes as a welcome Dickensian alternative. South Portland's Lyric Music Theater has mounted a very respectable revival of Bart's 1960 musical based on Oliver Twist. A curious but catchy melange of dark drama and vaudeville, Oliver! survives in its trio of principal characters, Fagin, Nancy, and Sykes, and the memorable music Bart has written for them. (more...)

BWW Reviews: PETER PAN, JR. in BridgeportBWW Reviews: PETER PAN, JR. in Bridgeport
by Sherry Shameer Cohen - Nov 13, 2014

A lot of people have had their hands in creating Peter Pan, Jr., and the result is a wonderful show for The Children. Based on the 1904 J.M. Barrie and 1953 Disney film, Peter Pan, Jr. streamlines a lot of the story and songs of the productions with which most adults are familiar. The most glaring omissions are the songs, 'I'm Flying' and 'I Won't Grow Up' and the barely visible strings of the flying effects. But this production at the Downtown Cabaret Children's Theatre more than make up for that. And, after all, most of the kids won't know what they missed, and will enjoy the show anyway. (more...)

by Roy Berko - Oct 27, 2014

C. Denby Swanson's 'The Norwegians,' now on stage at Dobama Theatre, centers on Tor and Gus, two Minnesota Norwegians, who are hit men who offer to 'whack' individuals who have 'done others wrong.' Olive, a former Texan, has been mistreated by her boyfriend. She meets Betty, who has hired Tor and Gus in the past to rid her of an ex- boyfriend. She is out to 'do in' another guy, but, for reasons which roll out later in the story, she doesn't hire Tor and Gus to do the job. Betty shares the Norwegian Mafia's information with Olive, who hires them, and the tale is off and running. (more...)
