The Met celebrates the new year with a new production of Bizet's Carmen by acclaimed English director Carrie Cracknell, opening on Sunday, December 31, at 6:30PM. In her highly anticipated Met debut, Cracknell reinvigorates the classic story of deadly passion with a staging that moves the action to modern day and explores themes that could not be more relevant today: gendered violence, abusive labor structures, and the desire to break through societal boundaries.

Just last night, Seth Meyers brought Jesus Christ Superstar to life in 'Popsicle Schticks'. The parody starts off with a quick nod to the iconic song 'Superstar,' then moves on to 'What's The Buzz?'. However, the lyrics sound a little more like this: 'What's the schtick? Tell me, what's a popsicle?' and 'Why should you want a schtick? Don't you mind about the popsicle.'

Alice Cooper, a seminal figure in rock 'n' roll whose compelling stage presence has made him a must see for five decades, has been cast as the flamboyant King Herod in NBC's staged rock concert of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR LIVE! to be aired Easter Sunday, April 1. Today in 1977, the first revival of Jesus Christ Superstar opened at the Longacre Theatre, where it ran for 96 performances. Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970 rock opera, whose music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and whose book and lyrics were written by Tim Rice. The musical started as a rock opera concept recording before its first staging on Broadway in 1971. The musical is loosely based on the Gospels's accounts of the last week of Jesus's life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion.

Exactly ten years after closing on Broadway, Boy George's TABOO returned to New York for a very special two-night-only engagement benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The concert starred Matthew Rowland (Boy George) and Samuel Buttery (Leigh Bowery), both of whom reprised their performances from the 2012 revival of TABOO at the Brixton Clubhouse in London. Jeremy Kushnier (Footloose, Jersey Boys, Jesus Christ Superstar) took on the role of 'Philip Sallon.' In the video below, original 'Big Sue' Liz McCartney sings 'Talk Amongst Yourselves.'

Academy Award, Tony Award and Emmy Award winner Christopher Plummer takes the stage for 16 performances only in a Center Theatre Group special event, "A Word or Two," which opened at the CTG/Ahmanson Theatre on Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Written and arranged by Plummer and directed by Tony Award winner Des McAnuff, "A Word or Two" is presented in association with the Stratford Festival of Canada and continues through February 9, 2014. Today, July 3, the New York Musical Theatre Festival hosted a press preview day in which several shows treated the audience to special performances. On hand to represent 'Stealing Time' was Jesus Christ Superstar alum Jeremy Kushnier, who performed the show's title number. Click below to see him in action!

As previously announced, Jeremy Kushnier (Jesus Christ Superstar, Footloose), Eden Espinosa (Wicked, Brooklyn), Rachel York (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Victor/Victoria) and Jack Noseworthy (A Chorus Line, Sweet Smell of Success) lead the cast of New York Musical Theater Festival's 'Stealing Time,' the latest work of writers/composers Tor Hyams and Lisa Neubauer. 'Stealing Time' will play as a special event in the 2012 New York Musical Theater Festival at the PTC Performance Space. 'Stealing Time' is the second NYMF project for Hyams coming off the success of 'Greenwood' starring Andrea McArdle in the 2011 New York Musical Theater Festival. Last week, the 68th annual Theatre World Awards were held on Tuesday, June 5th, 2012 at an invitation-only ceremony celebrating the 2012 Theatre World Award winners for Outstanding Broadway or Off-Broadway Debut Performances during the 2011-2012 theatrical season. "Sing", which was released on Universal/Decca on May 28, unites some of the Commonwealth's most talented and diverse musicians, led by Gareth Malone and his Military Wives Choir, and the Commonwealth Band. The Official Charts Company has confirmed that "Sing", has made it straight to the top of the Official Albums Chart this Diamond Jubilee weekend and it has reached No.11 in the Official Singles Chart.

More than 20 years after its premiere, Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens are re-inventing their first musical with Tony-nominated director Thomas Kail (In the Heights, Lombardi, Magic/Bird), choreographer Bradley Rapier (So You Think You Can Dance, Jesus Christ Superstar) and new orchestrations by music director Lynne Shankel (Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Altar Boyz).
