In what has become an annual ritual, a total of 36 established and emerging composers, lyricists, and librettists will converge on the Goodspeed campus from mid-January through mid-February 2016 to participate in the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony at Goodspeed Musicals. The writing teams, representing 19 new musicals, will populate the campus, creating a truly exciting environment for discovery and inspiration. The season opens July 30 with a modern take on Stephen Sondheim's game-changing musical Company directed by Actor's Express Artistic Director Freddie Ashley (Sweeney Todd, Rent). In the fall, Actor's Express will produce the Atlanta premiere of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' raucous dark comedy Appropriate, a standout at the 2013 Humana Festival of New American Plays. A visceral new production of Arthur Miller's classic American drama The Crucible kicks off 2017 followed by the Atlanta premiere of The Legend of Georgia McBride by Matthew Lopez, a music-filled comedy about an Elvis impersonator turned drag queen. In 2002, Suzan-Lori Parks became the first African-American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for her play Topdog/Underdog. Her other plays include Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2, &3), In the Blood, Venus, The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World, Fucking A, Imperceptible Mutabilities in the Third Kingdom and The America Play. In 2007 her 365 Days/365 Plays was produced in more than seven hundred theaters worldwide. Ms. Parks is a MacArthur Fellow and Master Writer Chair at The Public Theater. (more...)

Danieley has a strong Nashville connection, as well, having performed at the city's late and lamentable Opryland USA theme park during its heyday.
