Columbia University School of the Arts has announced the 2012-2013 Columbia Stages season of actors', directors' and playwrights' thesis productions at the Riverside Theatre, 3LD, the Connelly Theatre, and The Pershing Square Signature Center. Columbia Stages has expanded its season to a variety of venues throughout the City in order to provide third-year students with high-quality presentation spaces that meet the needs of their individual vision. The first production of the season will be Antigone/Progeny directed by Greg Taubman '13. (more...)

City Theatre to Present 2 PIANOS 4 HANDS, 11/30-12/22

City Theatre will present a brand new production of the smash comedy 2 Pianos 4 Hands, a melodic adventure featuring music ranging from Bach to Billy Joel and Elton John. Co-written by Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt and directed by Tom Frey, 2 Pianos 4 Hands is a City Events special presentation that will run on City Theatre's Mainstage from November 30 to December 22, 2013, with an Opening Night performance on Friday, December 6 at 8pm. Group rep Brings Us Back to 1837

Sometimes plays from the distant past are better left where they belong, or if revisited and given a fresh look, it is wise to make sure the pieces fit securely. Larry Eisenberg, a diligent and resourceful actor and director, ordinarily, has unwisely chosen to take Dion Boucicault's The Poor of New York, a melodrama in five acts, which was last seen on Broadway in 1857, and put a more realistic spin on it. It sounded interesting on paper, and especially with the promo that it would not be done for laughs but with a straightforward approach for pure dramatic effect. Despite some splendid staging and energetic cast contributions, the production, now onstage @ Group rep at Lonny Chapman is like a malfunctioning railroad car trying to catch up to the rest of the train.
