BWW Recap: R is For Rory on Twisty AMERICAN HORROR STORY
by Jessica Naftaly - Oct 20, 2016

All is finally revealed on the sixth episode of AMERICAN HORROR STORY Season 6; and it's safe to say, most of us aren't surprised. The big twist that creator Ryan Murphy is finally out and while it isn't completely surprising, elements of it certainly are while the show finally delivered on what we've been wanting and became the horror and suspense drama it promises to be. We find out immediately, just as many predicted, that the sixth episode would turn the docu-drama series that was My Roanoke Nightmare on its head; integrating both the subjects and the actors portraying them in the reenactments. In what was a brilliantly directed episode by Angela Bassett, making her behind the camera debut, Episode 6 really brought a new flavor, feel, and urgency to the series that elevated it above what we've seen the rest of the season, turning in on itself to make commentary on the industry and culture AMERICAN HORROR STORY itself is so ingrained in while upping the stakes for the story.  (more...)

BWW Review: Disappointing JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, Playhouse
by Andrew Anderson - Mar 5, 2016

There was some good singing, some good performances - particularly from Joshua Goldberg as Pilate and James Welch as Herod - plus some good staging ideas in the Playhouse production of Jesus Christ Superstar. So why was this production such a letdown - reflected in the tepid applause from the audience at the end? (more...)

BWW Reviews: THE TUTOR at Village Theatre Abandons Itself
by Jay Irwin - Mar 27, 2014

You're a cute little new musical that has workshopped itself at Village in their Village Originals program twice before. You have an interesting storyline and a fun little gimmick. You start off a little weak but there are sparks of potential. So why would you completely abandon that cute storyline and gimmick by Act Two and then proceed to beat your audience over the head with a tired message of letting time work things out? (A message that made no sense for what preceded by the way.) Unfortunately this is the question I found myself asking at Village Theatre's "The Tutor". Sure the performers shine but they shine in a show that has no idea what it wants to be or where it wants to go. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Heavy Handed THREESOME at ACT Might Have Something to Say
by Jay Irwin - Jun 15, 2015

If you want to ensure that people come to see your play then make sure you have well advertised nudity and sex in it. This is not a condemnation of "Threesome", the current play over at ACT, but a simple fact of the business of theater. But once you've lured those butts into the seats with the titillating title and promise of skin make sure you've got a story to keep the audience engaged once the actors put their clothes on. And while Yussef El Guindi's play does manage some interesting, hot button moments and topics the show feels somewhat forced at times and obscured by The Gimmick that got the audience there. (more...)
