Utah Opera Opens Season With Puccini's TOSCA, 10/10

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (Sept. 28, 2015) – Utah Opera takes audiences on a heart-stopping journey of forbidden love, loyalty, betrayal and tragedy in the 2015-16 season opening production of Puccini's “Tosca”. The performances, held at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theater, are October 10, 12, 14, and 16 at 7:30 PM, then October 18 at 2 PM. Following the success of last season's new DEMO series, Damian Woetzel continues to unite artists from across fields around a common theme in a performance on October 10, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. in the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater. This installment of the multi-genre series brings together acclaimed artists for a special one-night performance to celebrate their heroes and artistic inspirations. The cast of Heroes features soprano Jacqueline Bolier, singer/songwriter Kate Davis, Broadway and New York City Ballet star Robert Fairchild, tap dance powerhouse Jared Grimes, acclaimed ballerina Carla Korbes, visual art curator, author, and historian Sarah Lewis, Memphis jookin' dance pioneer Lil Buck (last seen as part of DEMO: Place), the MusiCorps Wounded Warrior Band, and jazz prodigy Matthew Whitaker. 9/11 TABLE OF SILENCE Returns to Lincoln Center

Artistic Director Jacqulyn Buglisi and Buglisi Dance Theatre are honored to be welcomed back by Lincoln Center for a sixth presentation of the transcendent  '9/11 Table of Silence,' a public performance tribute to 9/11 and prayer for peace and healing, conceived and choreographed by Jacqulyn Buglisi.  The tribute will take place Sunday September 11, beginning at 8:15 AM and concluding at 8:46 AM, the moment when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower.  Buglisi was inspired to create the 9/11 Table of Silence by Italian visual artist Rossella Vasta's sculptural installation of 100 ceramic plates that represent a banquet table uniting humanity.   Given the unrelenting and tragic acts of terror and violence that continue in the world,  '9/11 Table of Silence' remains as relevant and timely today as when it was first performed six years ago at Lincoln Center.   (more...)

Donizetti's LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR Opens in San Jose, Today

Opera San Jose opens its 2016-17 season with Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. Donizetti drew inspiration for this opera from Sir Walter Scott's The Bride of Lammermoor. The story revolves around a feud between two families, the Ashtons and the Ravenswoods. Lucia Ashton loves Edgar, master of Ravenswood, whose land her family has taken by force. When Lucia's brother, out of political necessity, forces her into an arranged marriage, there are dire consequences. Donizetti expertly combines the epic story of Lucia with some of the most wonderful melodies from his pen and the most affecting mad scene in theatre. (more...)

The Board of Directors of Theatre francais de Toronto (TfT), headed by Michael Davenport, announced today that Guy Mignault would retire from his position as artistic director in June 2016 after a term of 19 exceptional years as the head of the company. Commissioned by Beth Morrison Projects and National Sawdust, and adapted by Scheib from Ingmar Bergman's film of the same name, Persona is a provocative, highly cerebral, and artistically complex depiction of human frailty, cruelty and identity. MADAMA BUTTERFLY was never my favorite Puccini until the current production conceived by Anthony Minghella. Before, Butterfly always seemed too submissive, Pinkerton too brutish and their child, well, too cute. Now—particularly with the current cast, headed by the magnificent Kristine Opolais as the young geisha and the dashing Roberto Alagna as the clueless Pinkerton, her American husband--seemed to put my past reservations to rest.
