BWW Reviews: MICHELE LEE's First LA Cabaret a Smash at CatalinaBWW Reviews: MICHELE LEE's First LA Cabaret a Smash at Catalina
by Don Grigware - May 19, 2015

On Sunday May 17 at Catalina Jazz Club renowned actress/singer Michele Lee made her Los Angeles cabaret debut. Why has it taken this long? She takes her one-woman show Catch the Light on the road regularly and recently played 54 Below in NYC, but has never played a club in her hometown of LA. Well, it's high time, and the packed house agreed as the four-piece orchestra played the Beatles' 'Michelle, my belle...' as Lee was introduced to thunderous applause. She made her way through the audience singing the powerhouse 'Feeling Good', and with a combination of incredible drive and energy, an uber strong vocal style and sheer sauciness and personal sass, Lee's conquest of the room was guaranteed. Looking fabulous in black satin and sequins, she next essayed 'Nobody Does It Like Me' from her Broadway hit Seesaw. In the show she playe (more...)

Three of Cy Coleman's Broadway leading ladies invite you to a celebratory shindig buoyed by talent, palpably warmed by affection. Sometimes orchestrated as a harmonizing girl group and at others in distinctively different solo turns, Lillias White, Cady Huffman, and Randy Graff offer a banquet of Coleman's oeuvre in the 54 Below revue, My Guy Cy, which opened Friday night (and played again the following night). Arrangements by various musicians are texturally piquant, showcasing uncommon skill when interweaving songs. Direction (from vocalist Will Nunziata, who has a second flowering career) is fluid, deft, and winning. (more...)

Author Jane Larkin to Speak at Beth Haverim Shir Shalom in NJ, 4/28Author Jane Larkin to Speak at Beth Haverim Shir Shalom in NJ, 4/28
by BWW News Desk - Mar 30, 2015

Beth Haverim Shir Shalom to Host Jane Larkin, Author of 'From Generation to Generation,' on April 28 'Larkin...is clearly an important voice in the current discussion of intermarriage and Jewish continuity.' -Publishers Weekly Jane Larkin, a New Jersey native and author of 'From Generation to Generation: A story of intermarriage and Jewish continuity,' will explore the 'oys' and 'joys' of being a parent or grandparent of a child in an interfaith relationship on Tuesday, April 28 at 7:30PM at Beth Haverim Shir Shalom in Mahwah, NJ. The event is free and open to the community. With almost 60 percent of Jews who married from 2000 to 2013 choosing a partner from outside the faith, more and more families are struggling to navigate the challenges of interfaith relationships. Parents and grandparents worry that their children and grandchildren won't be Jewish. They want to learn how they can nurture an interfaith couple's engagement with Judaism and grandchildren's Jewish identity. Given her own interfaith journey, Larkin understands the concerns of Jewish parents and grandparents. She says, 'Interdating and intermarriage can make even the most open-minded Reform Jewish parents and grandparents anxious. It's one thing to welcome intermarried couples into the general community, but it is another when the mixed-faith couple involves your own child or grandchild.' Beth Haverim Shir Shalom is eager to have Larkin address the congregation because intermarriage touches a large number of member families in some way. 'The subject of interfaith relationships is very relevant to our members. Given Jane's journey, her interfaith family background, knowledge, reputation, and experiences, we want her to speak to our congregants,' say Jane Young, chairperson of the synagogue's outreach committee. About Jane Larkin Born and raised in New Jersey, Jane (Friedberg) Larkin is a graduate of Verona High School and former president of the youth group at Temple Sholom of West Essex in Cedar Grove. She has a BS from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and an MBA from Fordham University Graduate School of Business. She is the author of 'From Generation to Generation: A Story of Intermarriage and Jewish Continuity,' which Kirkus Reviews calls, 'An enlightening, encouraging take on the complexities of religious intermarriage.' Larkin writes for InterfaithFamily.com and contributes to 'The Seesaw' in the Forward. Her work has appeared in Tablet, Kveller.com, The Jewish Journal Boston, Jewish Exponent, ReformJudaism.org, The Center for Jewish Peoplehood Education and other outlets. She is a founding member of the Jewish Women's Foundation of New Jersey and is active in National Council of Jewish Women Greater Dallas and Jewish National Fund. She sits on the board of directors of Big Tent Judaism/Jewish Outreach Institute. She lives with her family in Dallas, TX. For more information about 'From Generation to Generation,' interviews, review copies, cover images and author photos, contact Jane Larkin at 214-287-0132, or visit www.interfaithandjewish.com. About Beth Haverim Shir Shalom Beth Haverim Shir Shalom is a 400-family welcoming Reform congregation in Northwest Bergen County serving Bergen (N.J.) and Rockland (N.Y.) counties. BWW Reviews: Playhouse's VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE Would Make Chekhov GiggleBWW Reviews: Playhouse's VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE Would Make Chekhov Giggle
by Joseph Baker - Mar 23, 2015

I wonder if Jackie Nichols is providing on-site psychiatric help for those involved in the repertory presentations of Anton Chekhov's THE SEAGULL and Christopher Durang's VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE at Playhouse on the Square. Surely the veteran Irene Crist, performing double duty as Director of both the uber-heavy Chekhov piece and the giddy Durang parody, is on a schizoid Seesaw as she veers from the serious to the silly - and the same might be said from the cast members who swap costumes and take their characterizations from one play to the next. Having just seen THE SEAGULL last week, I was eager to see how Durang's TONY-winning play would parlay all that Chekhovian talk about artists and pseudo-artists into something more laughter-inducing. However, rest assured that the talents involved in both plays rise (or fall, as it were) without any difficulty. (more...)

CINDERELLA AT 70 is ReleasedCINDERELLA AT 70 is Released
by BWW News Desk - Jan 14, 2015

Cinderella is alive and well in 2015. Prince Charming having divorced her for a trophy wife, she's teamed up with a new 70-year-old BFF as her mentor and author. She's learning about online dating, sex, boob jobs, botox, technology, the Millenia generation - and, of course, men. She can make a great martini - shaken, not stirred - and she's using her 2,000 years of experience to add a new dimension to everyone who meets her. Our favorite princess is delightful, funny, and promises to become your BFF too. The original idea for 'Cinderella at 70' was born when three women in their 60s spent a weekend together in Los Angeles, Treacy says. 'Sex and the City was hot,' she says. 'Over cosmos one evening, someone asked, 'Where do you think these women will be 30 years from now?' For the rest of the evening, happily inebriated, we continued to hypothesize. Would Carrie and Big have children? Would Miranda choose her career or life in Brooklyn? What would happen to Samantha and James? Would debutante Charlotte find happiness with her Jewish husband? It's taken 10 years from that night for Cinderella to evolve, but now we're both looking forward to the spotlight, the red carpet, and sharing our adventures with the world.' Toni Demarco, whose best seller Heartgasm, Increasing Intimacy and Ecstacy with Your Beloved was endorsed by Larry King, says 'Cinderella at 70' is a blissful read that took me on a journey and did not set me down until the final page.' Having already completed several pre-media buzz appearances in Las Vegas and Palm Springs, Treacy says, 'The stage is set for a roll out of 'Cinderella at 70' with many book readings, book signings, and media appearances lined up in 2015.' Request for review copies of the book can be secured at Beyond Publishing.net 702.623.2040. About Jane Friedlander Treacy Jane Friedlander Treacy is a native of Brooklyn, New York and a graduate of Barnard College and Columbia University. At the age of 15, she began her theatrical career working in off-Broadway theatres. At 20, she produced her first off-Broadway show, the hit revival of 'Anything Goes,' starring Hal Linden. For the next two decades, Jane produced more than 30 Broadway and National Touring shows, including 'Lord Pengo', starring Charles Boyer and Agnes Moorhead; 'The Odd Couple', starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman; 'South Pacific:, starring Jane Powell and Howard Keel; 'Can Can', starring Leslie Caron; 'Seesaw', starring Lucie Arnaz and Tommy Tune; 'The Rainbmaker', starring Burt Reynolds, and 'Charley's Aunt', starring Vincent Price and Roddy McDowell. Her productions received numerous awards, including the Lid Angele Drama Critics 'Outstanding Musical Award' and the Off-Broadway Critic's Circle Award. Jane also served as Special Assistant to New York Senator Jacob K. Javits, and co-produced the 1964 Democratic Party Rally at Madison Square Garden. She resided in Indianapolis from 1978-1998, where she founded and published Teen Track, the only not-for-profit news magazine in the United States written totally by, for and about teenagers. She also served as Managing Editor for Indianapolis Woman magazine, helped found and was elected president of two theatres, and received the 'Woman of the Year' for her philanthropic work. Since moving to Palm Desert, California 15 years ago, Jane founded and co-produced five seasons of Cabaret Theatre West and has served on the Boards of numerous not-for-profit organizations. She is honored to be included in 'Who's Who of American Women' and 'Who's Who Worldwide.' (more...)

While watching the Next Stage production of Gina Gionfriddo's RAPTURE, BLISTER, BURN at Theatre Memphis, I was reminded of John Van Druten's screenplay for the 1943 Warner Brothers film OLD ACQUAINTANCE. It was one of those 'women pictures' which provided thespic opportunities for the likes of actresses like Bette Davis and Miriam Hopkins, who, in fact, were the lead players in this particular film. In their youth, the two women had been friends, but as their paths parted in life, the Davis character, brittle and alone, became a critically acclaimed (if financially challenged) author, while the Hopkins character, finally penning a bestseller (trash that it is, it rakes in the 'big bucks'), jealously desires what Davis has. Mankiewicz's ALL ABOUT EVE, also starring Davis, you'll hear the character of stage actress 'Margo Channing' lament what a woman gives up when she devotes herself entirely to a career: I wonder if this very scene influenced Ms. Gionfriddo in her characterizations.) The other character, 'Gwen,' would obviously have been given over to Hopkins, who would have shone as the once promising woman who jettisoned her own burgeoning promise to marry 'Don Harper,' who once had been Catherine's intended (George Brent, anyone?).
