BWW Review: Fitfully Funny SEMINAR by The St. Louis Actors' Studio
by Chris Gibson - Oct 4, 2015

When you're a creative person it's very important to have other people check out your work, not just for validation, but to give you good, honest feedback. It's a vital part of the process, because it's a way for you to tweak the things that are good to make them better, and also to cut the things that just don't work for whatever reason. Playwright Theresa Rebeck applies this notion to fiction writers in her work SEMINAR. The St. Louis Actors' Studio is currently presenting a production of this play, and it's an interesting, if only fitfully amusing, look at how a group of writers react to the various criticisms they receive once they've signed up and paid for seminar with someone who's achieved a modicum of success in his given field. I think this will mostly appeal to those prospective authors who are curious about how such a seminar would function, and I think the general public will find it fairly entertaining, but not nearly as funny, or serious, as it could be. BWW Review: Aaron Sorkin's STEVE JOBS is a Theatrical Masterpiece
by Matt Tamanini - Oct 22, 2015

You can take the writer out of the theatre, but you can't take the theatre out of the writer. For the past 20 years, Aaron Sorkin has been one of Hollywood's most successful Scribes. From THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT to THE WEST WING to THE SOCIAL NETWORK, and many more remarkably successful projects in between, he has continually redefined the way audiences appreciate complex and intelligent characters. However, the writer made his name with his 1989 Broadway play A FEW GOOD MEN. Three years later, when the now iconic story made its way to the big screen, Sorkin wrote the screenplay, and his career as a screenwriter was born. However, with his latest film, STEVE JOBS, which opens nationwide on Friday, Sorkin proves that he still knows how to write an incredibly powerful three-act stage play, even if it just so happens to appear on the big screen. BWW Review: SPECTRE is Bland, Paint-By-Numbers Bond Film
by Matt Tamanini - Nov 5, 2015

No matter how many times a spy has had to use his license to kill, or how many women half his age he's taken to bed, or how many times he's ordered a martini 'shaken, not stirred,' at some point it all begins to be too much to handle; he begins to question the greater existential point behind all of the shooting, all of the romancing, and all of the drinking that he's done over the past 53 years. He begins to hate everything that he has been for over half a century. Welcome to your mid-life crisis James Bond; what's, waiting for you is SPECTRE, a joyless, paint-by-numbers Bond movie, where the colors are all beiges and greys, and nearly every form of familiar entertainment has been muted. Brill Publishers to Launch Reference Work 'Textual History of the Bible'
by BWW News Desk - Mar 26, 2016

The Bible is where it all began. Judaism would not be what it is today without the Bible. This foundation of Judaism has been transmitted and translated by both Jews and Christian over three millennia. The Dead Sea Scrolls and other ancient witnesses show that Scribes and translators have created manifold texts and translations. While doing so they wrote and rewrote the texts, inserted their interpretations and occasionally even erred. The so-called 'text of the Bible' has a multitude of ancient translations. The scholars, students and the interested public that want to be informed about these areas are often at a loss in their search for an appropriate reference work. Until today there was no such comprehensive reference work to study the Bible in its many versions and to understand its complicated textual history. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Mar 24, 2016

From Momma Rose to Annie Oakley to Reno Sweeney, nobody belted the big roles like Ethel Merman, who never had a flop in over three decades encompassing Broadway's Golden Age. George Gershwin told her never to take voice lessons, and he and fellow Scribes from Berlin to Porter worshipped Merman as a muse. Tony Award-winning music director Ted Sperling pays tribute to the star and the songs she inspired in Everything's Coming Up Ethel: The Ethel Merman Songbook. (more...)

Our Movie Critic Counts Down his 15 Favorite Movies of 2015
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 4, 2016

Now that 2015 is squarely in the rearview mirror, and everyone is back to work after the holidays, it is time to take a look at some of the best films of the past year. As was the case with my Top 15 TV Shows of 2015 list, this is not intended to be a comprehensive list. I am one man, and I have not yet seen every major movie released last year. However, as I continue to work through screeners and upcoming screenings (I live in Orlando, so not all of the awards-bait has been released here yet), I will count down the top 2015 releases that I saw during the calendar year. Notable omissions are BRIDGE OF SPIES, THE REVENANT, THE DANISH GIRL, and CONCUSSION, all of which I hope to see by the end of the week.
