BWW Feature: PICKLES THE PLAY at FringeNYCBWW Feature: PICKLES THE PLAY at FringeNYC
by Katelyn Corp - Jun 25, 2015

The New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC), North America's largest multi-arts festival, celebrates its 19th anniversary this August 14th-30th. This year, two talented former Community College of Rhode Island students are representing what the Rhode Island theatre community has to offer with their original play Pickles. Playwrights and co-stars Laura Minadeo and Alexander Rotella and their enthusiastic cast are spending their summer preparing for this huge opportunity. I was lucky enough to sit in on a fight choreography session to watch the playwrights and some of the cast in action. Before they got started, Laura, Alex, their close friend and castmate Erin Archer, and I sat down to talk about how Pickles was conceived, their journey so far to FringeNYC, and what the next few months have in store. BWW Reviews: Israeli Opera Festival Takes the Leap with TOSCA, Staged at the Foot of the Historic Masada FortressBWW Reviews: Israeli Opera Festival Takes the Leap with TOSCA, Staged at the Foot of the Historic Masada Fortress
by Richard Sasanow - Jun 25, 2015

At Masada—the mountain fortress in Israel's Judean Desert--a group of besieged Jewish rebels killed themselves rather than be taken alive by the Romans almost 2000 years ago. In Puccini's TOSCA, the eponymous heroine jumps from Rome's Castel Sant'Angelo rather than being taken prisoner for killing the evil chief of police, Scarpia. So much for the logic of staging this intimate work as part of the fifth edition of the Israeli Opera Festival--but, remarkably, the very traditional production by French director Nicolas Joel worked very well indeed in the great outdoors. by Richard Sasanow - Jun 25, 2015

At an hour-and-a-half's drive, the historic citadel at Masada--the mountain fortress in Israel's Judean Desert--is close enough to visit from Jerusalem as part of a pilgrimage or other tourism adventure. For visitors to the Israeli Opera Festival, held at the foot of Masada, the better idea may be to stay at one of the Dead Sea hotels, so that when you're not taking in your cultural fix, you can take in some local mud, float in the 33% salt water, contemplate Jordan on the opposite side of the sea, or simply bask in the sun at the lowest place on earth. by BWW News Desk - Jun 18, 2015

On the heels of D'Arcy Drollinger's run-away cult hit Shit & Champagne, Oasis - San Francisco's hottest new nightclub and cabaret theater - announced today the raunchy and wild sequel, Champagne White and the Temple of Poon.  In this newest incarnation, Drollinger's on-going tribute to female empowerment and low-budget exploitation films of the 1970s turns a winking eye towards the women's prison film genre, delivering 90 minutes of high-kicking action, spleen-splitting comedy and dance. Champagne White and the Temple of Poon will run Thursday-Saturday at 7 p.m. from July 16 - September 12, 2015. Press night will be held on Friday, July 17. General Admission tickets are $25. Front Row Premium tables available with Champagne purchase or bottle service start at $200 and include a front row table for four guests. Bookworks Presents Shelf Awareness for ReadersBookworks Presents Shelf Awareness for Readers
by BWW News Desk - Apr 28, 2015

William Faulkner wrote, 'The past is never dead. It's not even past.' That has never been truer than for Armenians, who cite the date of April 24, 1915--when several hundred Armenian intellectuals were rounded up and executed by the Ottoman government--as the beginning of the Armenian genocide; Turkey, however, heatedly rejects this. For an understanding of this fraught past--and its conflicting narratives--we look to history, memoir and fiction. (more...)

BWW Reviews: PETER PAN Takes Flight in a Magical New Production at Children's Theatre CompanyBWW Reviews: PETER PAN Takes Flight in a Magical New Production at Children's Theatre Company
by Jill Schafer - Apr 27, 2015

?Being a grown-up is hard. You have to be concerned about things like bills, a job, a house, traffic, the deterioration of the environment, and violence and injustice in our backyards and around the world. It's really a drag - no wonder Peter Pan doesn't want to be one! And while we boring and worried grown-ups don't have the option of returning to a blissful childhood, we can go to the Children's Theatre Company and forget about all of our grown-up worries, remembering and reveling in the joy and freedom of youth. What better choice for CTC, then, than the musical adaptation of J.M. Barrie's iconic tale about the boy who won't grow up? Kids love it because they see themselves in Peter, and we grown-ups see an even deeper meaning in the story as we watch the children around us grow up in an increasingly dangerous world, and long for our own days of innocence. It's a perfect choice perfectly executed by the entire cast and creative and technical teams. This PETER PAN is something quite magical, and quite simply the best thing I've seen at CTC. (more...)

KINGMAKER to Premiere in West End, May 4KINGMAKER to Premiere in West End, May 4
by BWW News Desk - Apr 22, 2015

Following its Edinburgh Fringe 2014 sell out success, the critically acclaimed Kingmaker hits The Arts Theatre in London and The Marlborough Theatre at The Brighton Fringe this Spring.  The writers of previous Edinburgh Fringe hits Coalition and Making News and multi-award winning director of Instinct For Kindness and Lockerbie - Unfinished Business have teamed with one of the most respected actors of his generation to present a satirical tale of political intrigue, gamesmanship and ambition in the corridors of power. Alan Cox is directed by Hannah Eidinow in Robert Khan and Tom Salinsky's Kingmaker, the story of a fictional yet strangely familiar political figure whose bumbling bonhomie disguises a fierce determination and a heart of steel.  The subject matter of this biting satire is expected to be brought into sharp focus in the last few days of campaigning for the general election and the inevitable political frenzy that follows during the mad month of May.   (more...)

So. Cal audiences should check out Musical Theatre West's rather admirable regional production of LES MISERABLES, which continues its limited run at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach through April 26, 2015. This highly-commendable, local production features a superb-sounding 30-person cast, an impressive arsenal of lighting, set, and costume designs, and strikingly lush musical accompaniment from a 16-piece live orchestra. Despite some choppy-ness in its narrative flow, the ear candy produced by this exceptional collective had me floating in euphoria. (more...)
