BWW Feature: PICKLES THE PLAY at FringeNYCBWW Feature: PICKLES THE PLAY at FringeNYC
by Katelyn Corp - Jun 25, 2015

The New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC), North America's largest multi-arts festival, celebrates its 19th anniversary this August 14th-30th. This year, two talented former Community College of Rhode Island students are representing what the Rhode Island theatre community has to offer with their original play Pickles. Playwrights and co-stars Laura Minadeo and Alexander Rotella and their enthusiastic cast are spending their summer preparing for this huge opportunity. I was lucky enough to sit in on a fight choreography session to watch the playwrights and some of the cast in action. Before they got started, Laura, Alex, their close friend and castmate Erin Archer, and I sat down to talk about how Pickles was conceived, their journey so far to FringeNYC, and what the next few months have in store. BWW Reviews: Israeli Opera Festival Takes the Leap with TOSCA, Staged at the Foot of the Historic Masada FortressBWW Reviews: Israeli Opera Festival Takes the Leap with TOSCA, Staged at the Foot of the Historic Masada Fortress
by Richard Sasanow - Jun 25, 2015

At Masada—the mountain fortress in Israel's Judean Desert--a group of besieged Jewish rebels killed themselves rather than be taken alive by the Romans almost 2000 years ago. In Puccini's TOSCA, the eponymous heroine jumps from Rome's Castel Sant'Angelo rather than being taken prisoner for killing the evil chief of police, Scarpia. So much for the logic of staging this intimate work as part of the fifth edition of the Israeli Opera Festival--but, remarkably, the very traditional production by French director Nicolas Joel worked very well indeed in the great outdoors. by Richard Sasanow - Jun 25, 2015

At an hour-and-a-half's drive, the historic citadel at Masada--the mountain fortress in Israel's Judean Desert--is close enough to visit from Jerusalem as part of a pilgrimage or other tourism adventure. For visitors to the Israeli Opera Festival, held at the foot of Masada, the better idea may be to stay at one of the Dead Sea hotels, so that when you're not taking in your cultural fix, you can take in some local mud, float in the 33% salt water, contemplate Jordan on the opposite side of the sea, or simply bask in the sun at the lowest place on earth. BWW Reviews: New Compact HAIRSPRAY A Rousing Winner at OC's Chance TheaterBWW Reviews: New Compact HAIRSPRAY A Rousing Winner at OC's Chance Theater
by Michael L. Quintos - Jul 27, 2015

Bravo to Chance Theater for taking on this mainstream hit and making it actually feel like a fresh, awesome little indie. Now playing through August 9, the latest offering from Orange County's bold, award-winning regional theater company is their own 'intimate' theater re-staging of HAIRSPRAY, the 2002 hit Tony Award-winning musical comedy. The results? Quite simply a more compact production that is an absolutely undeniable, all-around rousing winner. Under the direction of Kari Hayter, the celebratory production's immersive, semi-theater-in-the-round minimalist approach actually thrusts the show's outstanding music and comedy out front, wonderfully blanketing the audience in the show's pro-integration, pro-acceptance storyline about a rotund young lady with big hair and big dreams who sets off to change the world. by Jeffrey Walker - Jul 20, 2015

Welcome to the first of a series of reports from the outskirts of the big cities! For the next couple of weeks, I will be visiting some of the smaller cities and towns around that all share one thing in common: cultural gems that dot the landscape. Today, I present to you Culpeper's State Theatre and the recent performance by Lynchburg's Endstation Theatre Company. Endstation presented TWO GENTLEMEN OF VIRGINIA recently to the delight of an appreciative audience. I think the Bard would have been thoroughly entertained by a skillfully paved intersection of historical references from the 1780s and rock and roll memories of the 1980s. (more...)

BWW Reviews: MSMT Makes MUSIC MAN an Irresistible ValentineBWW Reviews: MSMT Makes MUSIC MAN an Irresistible Valentine
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Jul 17, 2015

Who doesn't love Meredith Willson's classic musical, Music Man, with its thrilling score, its witty humor, its irresistible combination of bravura and unabashed romanticism?. Generations have grown up on movie versions and memories of the big Broadway productions. So when a company undertakes a revival of such a classic, they risk the inevitable comparisons. Undaunted, Maine State Music Theatre has mounted a grand, original, and compelling look at this cornerstone of American musical theatre. The new production, directed by Marc Robin, starring Curt Dale Clark and Lauren Blackman, which opened at Brunswick's Pickard Theatre on July 16, skillfully fuses the familiar and the fresh into an evening of absolute delight. Truth be told, one of my favorite movies is Bring It On, the story of competitive cheerleading starring Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku, Jesse Bradford and Gabrielle Union - and if I had a dollar for every time I've uttered the phrase 'Brrr…it's cold in here, there must be some Toros in the atmosphere' to my dog following a particularly frigid winter stroll at nighttime...well, I'd be rich. That should give you some indication of how much I love the movie, which has gone on to inspire several sequels and one Broadway musical. (more...)
