Kean Theatre Conservatory Opens 2016-2017 Season

The Kean Theatre Conservatory will open its 2016-2017 season this week with Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis (October 14 - 22, Zella Fry Theatre). An Olivier nominee for Best New Play, Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train premiered Off-Broadway at Labyrinth Theater Company in 2000 under the direction of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Praised by The New York Times as a "probing, intense portrait of lives behind bars," Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train chronicles the story of Angel Cruz, who has recently been moved into maximum security at Rikers Island. While in protective custody he meets Lucius Jenkins, a sociopathic serial killer awaiting extradition to the state of Florida for execution. Linked by fate and facing an unpredictable outcome, Angel and Lucius tangle over questions of innocence and guilt, crime and punishment, and individual moral accountability. (more...)

JACK and Lukumi Arts Present Jadele McPherson

In this monumental week in Cuban and Cuban-American history, singer/performer Jadele McPherson creates a musical and theatrical bridge connecting the Cuban-American experience of today with black liberation figures, conjurers and spiritual leaders from two hundred years ago. Scenes of a young Cuban-American woman discovering her own rebellious ancestry are swallowed by music, dance and ritual featuring some of the great dance and music artists this city has to offer, many coming out of Cuban and Haitian traditions, including Osvaldo "Bembesito" Lora, Val Jeanty, Maxine Montilus, Yomaira Gonzalez, Caridad Paisan Garbey, Daniel Gil, Hansel Vaillant, Miguelo Valdes, Charles Hart and Diosvany Valladares. Themes of black resistance - both historical and contemporary - swell in this colorful and immersive spectacle.  (more...)

Assistance League Helps Promote Childhood Literacy for 'Make a Difference Day'

In support of the annual 'Make A Difference Day,' Assistance League of Tustin, in partnership with THINK Together, collected and donated a wide selection of 1,254 new and gently-used books (appropriate for infants through 10 years of age) to local schools and organizations that are in need. Books were collected at the Assistance League Thrift Shop located in Old Town Tustin, Peet's, Lost Bean, True Brew, and Kean's Coffee houses, Archie's Ice Cream, Rutabegorz, After's Ice Cream, Zama Tea and Kombucha Inc., 7 Leaves Tea, and Once Upon A Story at the Enderle Center in Tustin. Whodunit? First Ever Murder Mystery Set for Liberty Hall Museum

For the first time, Liberty Hall at Kean University will host a Murder Mystery at the Museum in the 244-year-old historic mansion of New Jersey's first elected Governor, William Livingston. Guests will be transported to 1932 when they arrive at the beautifully decorated Liberty Hall for a dinner party. However, murder is on the menu, and it is up to the dinner guests to solve this whodunit. (more...)
