CASA 0101 Theater and Angel City Theatre Ensemble to Present MARIELA IN THE DESERT

CASA 0101 Theater, Josefina Lopez, Artistic Director and the newly formed production company, Angel City Theater Ensemble (ACTE), Vance Valencia, Founder, will present the Los Angeles Premiere of the critically acclaimed play, MARIELA IN THE DESERT, written by Karen Zacarias, directed by Robert Beltran (Star Trek:  Voyager; Zoot Suit; Eating Raoul).  The production will be presented for a five-week run on the theater's Main Stage located at 2102 East First Street (at St. Louis Street), Boyle Heights, CA  90033 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and on Sundays at 5:00 p.m., November 4 - December 11, 2016.  There will be no performances on Thanksgiving Weekend, November 25th, 26th and 27th. Charles Liteky Releases 'Renunciation'

Liteky placed the Congressional Medal of Honor he received for his service in Vietnam at the base of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Takoma Ensemble to Present Concert Exploring Themes of Immigration

The Takoma Ensemble, a classical string orchestra, will offer a concert exploring the theme of immigration Saturday, January 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 633 Sligo Ave., Silver Spring. The concert, co-sponsored by CASA, is entitled The Golden Door: Music Without Borders, and will be led by Artistic Director and Conductor Victoria Gau. The concert will feature several works by American immigrants, beginning with a solo performance by Billboard winner Lilo Gonzalez. Other selections include Divertimento for Strings by Bela Bartok, Hungarian immigrant to the United States, and the world premiere of Beside the Golden Door, by Kim and Kathryn Kluge (Kim is the son of immigrants). The  concert will include Within Her Arms, composed by Grammy nominee Anna Clyne, and Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, written by Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos, the most famous South American composer of all time. Spanish commentary will be provided by Lindolfo Carballo, of CASA, and English commentary will be provided by Gau, and the performance will be followed by a Q&A and reception. Tickets are $10-$25 (kids 16 and under are free) and are available at takomaensemble.org. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to CASA. More information is available at 240-463-3695. (more...)

Entering its 30th anniversary year, Mark DeGarmo Dance is a not-for-profit that integrates three focal concerns: educate underserved New York City communities, especially children, through dance arts; create, perform and disseminate original dances, artistic and scholarly work; and build intercultural community. The organization's vision is to enliven bodies, shift perspectives and change lives. With programming that has been called 'a national model' by the National Endowment for the Arts, Mark DeGarmo Dance has maintained New York City Department of Education contracts for arts education services since 1987. MDD's artistic pillar in particular presents original artist-scholar works that reflect and celebrate the multicultural experience of our communities. Mark DeGarmo has created and produced over 100 dances and 28 international tours involving cultural diplomacy and exchange in 12 countries across Latin America and Europe. In 2015, DeGarmo received the Martha Hill Dance Fund's 15th Anniversary Mid-Career Award and the Sophie Gerson Healthy Youth Foundation's Recognition. (more...)
