The 5 & Dime and Delegal Law Office to Present NEVER THE SINNER
by BWW News Desk - Oct 30, 2016

Chicago, May 21,1924. Nathan Leopold Jr., age 18, and Richard Loeb, age 19, killed 14 year old Bobby Franks and we're quickly apprehended when Leopold's glasses were found near the corpse. Clarence Darrow defended them, pleading eloquently against capital punishment. Why would wealthy young men murder an innocent boy? What demons lurked behind Loeb's flashing good looks? Behind Leopold's saturnine intellect? This exquisite Off Broadway hit explores the complex relationship between these two who longed to create a private world of fevered intellect and romantic passion. The author suggests that, given twists of fate and character, Leopold or Loeb could be anyone who has loved too much, had a broken heart, wanted to prove everlasting devotion, or looked at a loved one and thought ' I'd die for you... I'd kill for you.' This is a love story set to themes of crime and punishment,  the press, the times, humanism,  Nietzsche philosophy and the end of the jazz age. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Oct 16, 2015

The director and designers behind Rubicon Theatre Company's acclaimed environmental productions ofFiddler on the Roof and Man of La Mancha have reunited on the two-piano chamber version of the legendary Lerner and Loewe's classic My Fair Lady. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, the musical tells the story of Professor Henry Higgins, an arrogant and attractive phonetician who makes a wager that he can transform a 'deliciously low' Cockney flower-seller (Eliza Doolittle) into an elegant lady by teaching her to speak more beautifully. The magnificent score includes 'I Could Have Danced All Night,' 'On the Street Where You Live,' 'Wouldn't It Be Loverly,' and 'I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face.' For Rubicon's production, Director James O'Neil returns to the source material to explore the Shavian themes of class struggle, social reform and women's rights. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Sam Bass Presents Unnerving, Spectacularly Performed NEVER THE SINNER
by Jeff Davis - May 26, 2015

The production has several aces up its sleeve, the first being John Logan's script. Logan-the scribe behind the plays Red and I'll Eat You Last, films Gladiator, The Aviator, Sweeney Todd, Hugo, and Skyfall, and the T.V. show Penny Dreadful-is easily one of the greatest contemporary writers in any medium. His gift for creating edge-of-your-seat pacing, engrossing and flawed characters, and witty dialogue shows through in Never the Sinner, Logan's 1985 work and first play. (more...)

BWW Reviews: NEVER THE SINNER - Compelling Courtroom Drama
by John James DeWitt - Jun 7, 2015

The true story of murderous teens Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb has seen many iterations over the years, from thinly veiled derivatives like ROPE, COMPULSION or MURDER BY NUMBERS to direct accounts of their actions such as the musical THRILL ME, or the subject of this review, John Logan's NEVER THE SINNER. BWW Review: CLARENCE DARROW at Rubicon Theatre Company
by Cary Ginell - Jun 4, 2016

It's funny how many shows we've seen recently that bring to mind concepts evident in the current election season. In In the Heights, it was the plight of immigrants trying to make lives for themselves in America, in Amadeus, it was a lead character with an obsessive personality, and in Ragtime, it was a character who seeks justice for a racially-based assault. In David W. Rintels' one-man play, Clarence Darrow, which made its debut last weekend at the Rubicon Theatre Company, reexamines the life of a man whose philosophy of democratic socialism reflects the political philosophy of Democratic challenger, Senator Bernie Sanders.
