A previously unseen and newly acquired photograph of one of Britain's most important actresses, Vivien Leigh, and her husband Laurence Olivier, taken at the height of their celebrity status will go on display at the National Portrait Gallery tomorrow (Friday 1 November 2013). The photograph will be shown alongside two rarely seen portraits of the couple to mark the start of the Gallery's programme celebrating the centenary of Leigh's birth. (more...)

Cleveland Play House (CPH) will host their 17th Hall of Fame Luncheon on Tuesday, May 14th in the Allen Theatre at PlayhouseSquare. This year's honorees have contributed to the success of CPH through many different avenues, and their professional accomplishments have accentuated CPH's proud history. This year's recipients include Dorothy and Frank Draz, Dee Hoty, Barclay Leathem and Jack Weston. Also being recognized is The Women's Committee of Cleveland Play House, which will be presented with the Heritage Award by Roe Green for their contributions to CPH. (more...)

La Jolla Playhouse announced today that nationally-renowned scenic designer Robert Brill has been named the theatre's inaugural Artist-in-Residence. This new, multi-month residency program, supported in part by a generous donation from Playhouse Director Emeritus Des McAnuff, is designed to give artists the freedom to focus on their ongoing body of work while becoming fully integrated into all aspects of the institution, from the stage to the boardroom to the classroom. In addition to designing the sets for His GirlFriday and Sideways this season, Brill will participate in the Playhouse's artistic planning, education and outreach activities, lead master classes at UC Dan Diego and serve as a community liaison for arts advocacy in San Diego, among other Playhouse activities. Des McAnuff was invested into the Order of Canada at a ceremony presided over by the Governor General in Ottawa this morning. The Stratford Festival extends heartiest congratulations to Mr. McAnuff, who was Artistic Director from 2008 through 2012, and is currently directing Tommy, a musical based on the album by The Who, which he helped composer-lyricist Pete Townshend create. David Daniels and Natalie Dessay will sing the leading roles of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra inDavid McVicar's production of Handel's Giulio Cesare, which premieres at the Met April 4. Baroque specialist Harry Bicket will lead ten performances of the popular staging, originally produced at the Glyndebourne Festival, which incorporates many innovative elements into the story of Caesar and Cleopatra's unlikely romance-including extensive choreography by Andrew George. The other principal stars of this production include Alice Coote in the trouser role of the Roman youth Sesto, Italian baritone Guido Loconsolo in his Met debut as the scheming Egyptian general Achilla, John Moore as the Roman general Curio, and three stars of McVicar's original Glyndebourne Festival production: Patricia Bardon as the Roman widow Cornelia, Sesto's stepmother; Christophe Dumaux as Tolomeo, Cleopatra's brother and co-ruler; and Moroccan countertenor Rachid Ben Abdeslam in his Met debut as the Egyptian servant Nireno. The production features set design by Robert Jones, costume design by Brigitte Reiffenstuel, and lighting design by Paule Constable. The Saturday, April 27 matinee performance of Giulio Cesare will be transmitted worldwide as part of the Met's Live in HD series, which is now seen in more than 1,900 movie theaters in 64 countries around the world. The panel discussion series will kick off on Sunday, March 30 following the 3 p.m. performance with playwright, Joseph Zettelmaier, who will discuss his inspirations for the play. Nicola has announced that Fetch Clay, Make Man, written by Will Power and directed by Des McAnuff, will begin performances tonight, August 23 at NYTW, 79 East 4 Street, between Bowery and Second Avenue. Independent Theatre began its theatrical life at the Adelaide Fringe in 1984, and celebrates its 30th birthday this year. To start the year, it is mounting Bernard Shaw's seldom-seen, but scintillatingly topical political comedy, Caesar and Cleopatra, about the aging Julius Caesar's attempts to educate Egypt's 16-year-old queen in the politics of power.
