BWW Review: SINATRA 101 Puts You at the Sands with Frank and his Big Band
by Shari Barrett - Nov 29, 2016

As a lifelong fan of Frank Sinatra thanks in part to my Mom being one of the bobbysoxers who fawned over him as I did for the Beatles, I was thrilled to jump at the chance to attend SINATRA 101 at the El Portal in Noho on November 26, 2016 at one of the 2 shows they did that date. Since 2011, Matt Mauser and the 101 Big Band led by Pete Jacobs have been playing Frank Sinatra's greatest hits with high-octane arrangements. Their collaboration captures Sinatra at the height of his career at the Sands Hotel in early 1966, backed by Quincy Jones conducting the Count Basie Orchestra. (more...)

BWW Review: Salty Brine Brings DEAN. MAYBE FRANK. MAYBE SAMMY. to Pangea
by Troy Frisby - Mar 6, 2017

Stumbling onstage, Salty Brine was divinely off-kilter as the reincarnation of Dean Martin in DEAN. MAYBE FRANK. MAYBE SAMMY. at Pangea. Newly returned from Vegas and looking worse for wear in the role, the performer was sporting bandages and a neck brace from a recent car crash, he later explained. For the latest in Brine's LIVING RECORD COLLECTION, in which he covers a full album in its entirety, he selected Radiohead's OK COMPUTER. Despite channeling Rat Pack vibes in both his patter and his aesthetic, musically, he didn't stray far from Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke's Gen X nasal whine, with an added boost from Brine's trademark theatricality and a few snippets from Ol' Blue Eyes thrown in here and there. BWW Review: Hedwig Rocks to the Strum of Her Guitar in HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH
by Dylan Shaffer - Jan 25, 2017

Before Hedwig was the semi-known rock star she is today, she was a resident of East Berlin during the Cold War who found solace in American rock music. This influence led her West to America where she continued finding herself and her other half. It is this longing for her unknown other half that pushes her narrative six inches forward and gives this hero her quest. Through flashy lights and electric guitar, Hedwig and the Angry Inch brings a genderqueer rock story from East Berlin to Western Pennsylvania in over-the-top fashion. (more...)
