Ricky Ritzel's Broadway returns to Don't Tell Mama on Sunday, Oct. 4th at 8PM with music and laughs from 'Ben Franklin in Paris,' 'Damn Yankees' and 'Gypsy.' The series, running since summer, is fashioned after Sylvia Fine Kaye's 'Musical Comedy Tonight' PBS programs from the 1970s. Each installment of Ricky Ritzel's Broadway, lauded as 'extraordinary' by Theater Pizzazz, highlights songs and stories from Broadway musicals with a star studded revolving cast. Ritzel, a widely admired performer and denizen of New York piano bars and the Cabaret world, gives wry commentary as well as accompanying the performers on piano. (more...)

Happy Birthday, Robert Preston! best remembered for his performance as 'Professor' Harold Hill in Meredith Willson's musical The Music Man (1962). He had already won a Tony Award for his performance in the original Broadway production, in 1957. In 1965 he was the male part of a duo-lead musical, I Do! I Do! with Mary Martin, for which he won his second Tony Award. He played the title role in the musical Ben Franklin in Paris and originated the role of Henry II in the original production of The Lion in Winter. In 1974 he starred alongside Bernadette Peters in Jerry Herman's Broadway musical Mack & Mabel as Mack Sennett, the famous silent film director. That same year (1974) the film version of Mame, another famed Jerry Herman musical, was released with Preston starring, alongside Lucille Ball, in the role of Beauregard Burnside. (more...)

BWW Review: In Terrific and Festive Show, MICHAEL FEINSTEIN Is Better Than Ever At The Club Now Bearing His Name

Thirty years ago, championed by Liza Minnelli (Ira Gershwin's goddaughter), young Michael Feinstein debuted at the iconic Oak Room of The Algonquin Hotel. I was there, having been escorted by an older, more sophisticated friend. As I recall, Feinstein was alone at the piano; thoroughly engaging, telling stories of his time as Ira Gershwin's assistant, even then, peppering the show with lesser-known songs. This past Sunday, this standard bearer of The American Songbook began a run (through December 30) in partnership with the New York club now bearing his name, Feinstein's/54 Below (“The only place I have to sleep with myself to get the job,” he quipped). Though he's performed in the city since the 2012 closing of his room at Loew's Regency Hotel, the artist no longer had a place to call home in New York. This has happily been rectified. (more...)
